Default thinking about building a chopper

i wrecked my road king last summer. it was on a trailer that came separated from the truck and flipped over. the core of the bike is good (frame, front end, swing arm, etc) but all the sheet metal, bags, bars, and stuff got pretty mangled. i bought the bike back from the insurance company for 2k. i thought that was a little steep but i did it anyway.

my intention was to rebuild it in style of these bikes. these are softails but the idea is the same. apes, fish mouth pipes. i love these bikes by the way. they are from hdforums.

this is what my rk looks like now.

i recently aquired some chopper parts in a trade with a buddy that was building a chopper off of a suzuki motor. i got a frame that still needs a lot of fab, wide glide front end, 800 engine i can sell, 250 rear tire and wheel, 21" front wheel.

it looks like there is enough room to fit my engine in the frame. it will just take a lot of fab to make it work. i'm no fabricator but a couple of my buddies are pretty good. especially the guy that built the frame.

i just don't know what to do. 2 buddies at work have choppers and are steering me in that direction . on the other hand, a one off custom road king would be cool too. and a lot less work. given the choice without money being a key factor(let's say it will cost the same to build either), what would you build? chopper or road king?

I would build the RK myself. I liked the pic you posted of the style you want to go with.

I would build the RK just because the frame is already set up for an FLH engine and tranny. There arent a boatload of rigid frames out there with the FLH set-up. I built a rigid a couple of years ago and it was alot of fun and some aggravation also, bit I think a cool RK would be the way I'd go.

Do you have another bike? I'd love to have a rigid custom, but not as an only bike. The RK would be more useable, the chopper would have more cool-factor.

I've built 3 from the ground up, and I'll never do that again. What a pain in the a**. I suppose it wouldn't have been too bad if I paid someone to assemble some store-bought parts, but to actually do it all myself and waste money on crap I thought would fit and then didn't...well, you get my drift. The insurance companies were all too scared to insure them for a reasonable premium because they weren't titled as Harleys as well.

I would build a mild custom out of the King's parts if I were you.

Just my .02.
