Sorry folks, but I am going to take what may be an unpopular position on this. IMHO - the biggest risk to riders is "NOT BEING SEEN" by cagers. Riding near a big rig you still may not be seen, but the big rig will be seen and it can provide some degree of a "Safety Zone". That being said, I do not automatically snuggle in behind or next to just any truck. If I am riding along and observe a trucker that is driving responsibly, I may use him as a shield. Most truckers are decent drivers and most I have encountered on the road do kinda look out for bikers. MOST DOES NOT MEAN ALL!!! That is why it is important to observe, evaluate, and decide on a case by case basis. Regarding the tires blowing - ya - that can be a problem. My experience is that if you are going the same direction as the truck, you should be able to hear and smell the signs of a tire ready to blow. If the truck is coming towards you on a two lane when it decides to toss it's rubber, Good luck. A 3 foot long piece of retread coming at you at 70 MPH can take your head off right quick.

I'm with you, I see stupidity every day here in Los Angeles, and this is from what I take to be " commuter bikers". Ignorence is too nice for someone with NO commen sense. Just this morning a bike tailgating a pick up with a couple sticks of conduit ( it was even flagged) poking out the bed, not even on the side where the conduit was not, at 5:30 in the am, no traffic...WTF.. We all have done stupid ****, but I guess it's what ya learn from it,,,death is to final for me.

Won't ride behind unless can't get around, then keep as much distance as possible. If a large cage of any kind is running up on me faster than I want to go I let them by. I live in Ks., it's windy and I will use them for a wnd break if the fast lane is clear.
