Why do I see so many bikes on the road riding directly behind or beside tractor trailers? Do they not think this is a dangerous place to be? Riding from KY to NC yesterday I saw many doing this. What really got me was a group going through the gorge on I40 right behind a big rig and all the lead guy could see was "1 800 How's My Driving". Have they never seen a recap blow or a truck run over debris in the road? My advice, for what that's worth, get on the throttle and stay away from these things.
Like you said, they have not seen a recap blow or the chit that can fly from those rigs. Had one spit a stone at me from between the tires (or in the treads) and it hit the front of my helmet like a bullet. Never saw it, chipped the paint all the way down though. Once it happens to you, you learn to keep back or pass. Had the truck thrown a recap, I'd a been toast. All part of the learning curve. Never stay behind any truck.
Probably never taken a motorcycle safety course or have experienced friends to point this stuff out. This is the kind of stuff that I tell all new riders about. Might save their life.
Had a friend last summer get sucked into an 18-wheeler, died instantly. I've felt air currents before from these rigs and it is a shaking feeling. I punch it every time I'm coming up on one up to 90+ if I have to.
I also had a trailer run over a pizza box and flip it up at me on the freeway, won't ever forget that, barely got out of the way. Don't think that would have felt good.
I want nothing to do with being close to a semi. And yes, I have felt the wind currents and it isn't nice. If I go around one I don't mess around. I had a semi blow a retread when I was in a cage behind him. I was back a ways and the rubber still smacked the cage really hard and seeing it come at me freaked me out.
