HOKA-HEY Officiial Iron Ass TRACKING THREAD
This event seems to have been poorly organized. For instance without mandatory GPS tracking of competitors there is no way to prove a competitor followed the rules or cheated.
The obvious question is how do you determine the winner of the $500,000 when there are no strictly enforced rules or routes and vague instructions.
Also with no mandatory rest times at check points, they are creating a situation where exhausted riders are going to crash and kill themselves or pose a danger to others.
Finally how can you have a competition where everyone has to follow the speed limit?
As for the lie detector, not sure if this is just a rumor. Lie detectors are not accepted in court because they are scientifically proven to be inaccurate. Anyone who knows how to flex their sphincter muscle can fool one. Watch Penn & Tellers show Bullshit - they did an entire episode on lie detectors.
The way this is run I can see the $500,000 purse being a fraud. The organizer could simply award the money to someone of their choosing who will then kick ~95% back to them.

I think with no GPS the best way would be to highlight it on a map - tape it to the bars or in a tank bag along with a little roll chart like enduro racers use. Wonder what techniques the faster guys used.
Some type of transponder would solve the "over the speed limit" or "take the highway" issues.
Looking forward to how this one sorts out.
I hope this wasn't a fraud.
H-H organizers once said the winner would be announced today at the celebration. (I wonder how many or what percentage of starters made it to the final destination.) I have also read somewhere that the announcement of the true "winner" would be delayed until the return to Sturgis.

Scroll down a bit on the link and you will find the report.
This happened on the Glenn Highway between Tok and Palmer. NOT even on the route........Probably some poor soul trying to get to Homer in time for the party pushing himself.
I sure hope this Jim Red Cloud guy is proud of himself for 2 deaths and multiple injuries on HIS big challenge. IF I were one of the top finishers in the running for the "supposed" prize money I don't think I would have the stomach to accept the "blood money" Rather I would donate it to the families of the fallen warriors.
Has anyone heard the organizers at any time recognize the sacrifice or express their sympathay for the deaths or injuries??
