Hey all...New member here that is taking the plunge from an R1 to an Electra Glide...I almost bought a Yamaha Tour Deluxe but just didn't love it...I did like the price tag though lol (08 with 9k miles for $7500) Sorry for such a long post but had to paste the ads...
So here's my dilemma...
I've found 2 bikes that I think are good deals but I want a much more experienced crew to eval it...If not the best deal, then guidance to find one would be greatly appreciated...I've got cash in hand...
Here are the specs for each and their ads pasted:
Bike #1 being sold by a widow of Vet that passed from Cancer from Agent Orange (Just like my dad did 3 yrs ago, so it's got some emotional ties for me) $11,500 title free and clear
Ad #1 2005 HD ELECTRA GLIDE ,
color- chopper blue
show lights (red)
rhinehart dual pipes ( for true harley sound about $1,500)
hd chrome light shields (with hd emblems)
dragon wings- side wind shields
front lift kit- raised about 2 inches
chrome foot pedals
chrome crash bars
chrome engine kit tourin-700dollars
chrome oil filter housing-89 dollars
lots and lots of chrome
23,668 miles
extras included------------------
t-bag
matching riding jackets ( with liners) ( they don't fit me or wife)
battery tender
motorcycle jack
tent
sleeping bag
cover
1 half faced helmet good
chrome buttons in pack( not installed)
Need to add a radio and $400 (5k service and rear brake job)
or Option #2 $11,500
2006 Black FLHTCI loaded with 29k miles; owned by a late 50s gentleman that is about to retire and doesn't want the $350 payment; still has at least 3 months of extended warranty and possibly some prevent maintenance left; would need to add exhaust, tour pack quick release and extra chrome on it. Also I'd have to pay his bike off then wait for title to go to Harley dealership, then he signs, then I can title it to myself; Kind of risky...we conferenced called to HD finance so I feel confident that he's on the up and up though...He's taking the bike tomorrow to be inspected for me by HD service dept.
First bike has been sitting since 08; I drove it today and it started right up, idled it for about 5 min, took it easy for a mile or 2 then drove normal; amazing sound from the Rhineharts!!!! 1st Bike is 45 mins from me; 2nd bike is 7 hours from me...
If your just starting off with a harley you can't just get an electraglide you need to start off with an 883 sportster and work your way up. In order to move up to the next a bigger bike you will need to petition Willie G. jk
I'd say going from a R1 Racing bike to a Electra glide is a huge change. Have you considered any other models or our you set on the Electra? But yeah starting off on a sportie is pretty common but in the end it will be up to you. My first bike was a Fatboy. Also you need to consider what type of riding you want to do. You can tour on any bike IMO as long as your comfortable but not any bike can come into a sharp corner hot and still come out ok. Just think about what you are planning to do and maybe take a look at some of the other models, or go for a ride on a few diffrent ones if you haven't already, before you make your decision, in the end it is truly up to you.

Thanks guys for the quick response..Definitely a big change from metric to HD...I've done the sport bike thing with high speeds (173) and being anxious everytime I'm riding b/c cant keep it below limits and Leo is out writing tickets...I'd much rather kick back and chill at this point..I'm planning some longer rides with the wife...1st trip is going to be to New Orleans to see the oil slick, volunteer, then stimulate local economy at several watering holes...
I drove the 2010 road king and the EG the other day...So much more comfortable on the EG...I found myself jamming to classic rock at a chill 60mph over the lake...No desire to add a radio to a road king..just not my preference at this point but I'm a HD newbie so my opinion doesnt count for **** yet...
From a price perspective, is that about as good a deal as they get or should I hold out for more savings so I can put it back into the bike...I really do love the idea of helping out the widow..I'd like to add a lot of poker runs and memories that they didn't get to have...Not to mention that bike has some star power and it hauls ***..not sure what all he did to the engine but it was faster than the 2010 EG 96
thanks again guys for the advice...I've got to make a decision tomorrow...
I have bought my last four bikes in the winter months price seems to be better atleast from my area. G/L and remeber no matter what anyone tells you if you think that it's a good deal then it is, don't worry about tom, dick, and harry it's not their money. Of course nothing wrong with a few opinons to make you feel better.
The wife is riding me to wait til winter for better pricing too...I didnt realize how much I missed riding though until I started looking at bikes..the icing on the cake was when I rode the other day...I felt like I shook off 10lbs of stress in less than 45 mins of riding..Best quote I've seen on here is " You don't see any motorcycles in a therapist parking lot"..so very true 8-)
Not to mention if the people are as awesome in the rides as what I've seen from trolling through here before I registered, getting the Harley is gonna put one helluva twist on the summer..OBX and dragons tale, here we come 8-)

Im gonna go with #1 as your choice too. Like everyone else said. All the extras and helping the widow of a vet. Also let me say this. Some folks are suggesting that you start small. Well, I went without a bike for about 17 years and my last one was a rice burner. I bought an Electra Glide and got on and rode like it was just yesterday. If you have experiance and have enough common sence to be careful untill you really learn the difference, you'll be just fine going from the R1 to a heavy weight bagger. As far as Im concerned, After being on the EG i'll never own anything smaller again.
