I've always pulled just off one corner or the other of the car in front of me.
Never directly in back of the car.
In first gear, clutch pulled in watching in the mirrors for the car behind me to stop.
And if I can see it, the car behind the one behind me stops also.
If some moron hits the car that's behind me, it can push it into me.
That way I always have an out if something like that happens.
I don't want the be the "meat" in a car sandwich.
While I'm stopped I keep an eye on the mirror and if someone is approaching I will keep tapping the brakes so the rear lights flash. With the run-brake-stop mod I'm hoping that all 3 lights will help. Still, I'm ready to move just in case.
I know that when I heal from my accident I'll be a different driver for the good. I just hope that I won't be overly cautious and nervous that it ruins the ride.
I can tell you from experience, you will be overly cautious at first. Then you will get a little less apprehensive, but it will always be in your mind.
Thats one reason I love splitting lanes at intersections. You dont have to wory about that cager that isnt paying attention and your the first to leave.

+1 The run/brake/stop mod was the first thing I did when I brought my current bike home. Tapping the brake in a ...___... pattern seems to get their attention, and I find that they seem to stop a bit further behind me than they used to.
