Default Split tank running out of gas with 2.7-2.8 left.

My 91 Heritage runs out of gas, I go to reserve and make it to a gas station, and it only holds 2.2-2.3 gallons of gas. The left tank(with the petcock) is virtually full, most of the gas goes into the right hand tank. What's up?

I learned the hard way that I have to fill up the left first and then the right on my 95 flstn. First time I put gas in her I only filled up the right 143 miles latter I was reaching for the valve switching to the reserve.

Some kind of vapor lock going on in the left tank? Check your vent tube to ensure it is working.

Also, make sure your cross over tubes are clear.

Thanks, I'll check that.

+1 on the cross over tube and does the left tank have a vented cap ? Maybe the cap vent is plugged? In the 1st post you mentioned the left tank was full, didn't see where you stated that you fill the left tank first. For all you split tank types, how does the fuel get from one tank to the other, i.e. right to left vice versa? Just curious.

Left cap is NON-VENTED !!!!! (That's why many have LEFT handed threads, so you can't switch 'em accidentally)Fuel flows back n forth thru the BOTTOM crossover hose. The UPPER crossover hose is how the LEFT tank is vented.
The reason you have a NON-VENTED left cap, is for when the scoot sits on the kick stand. IF the cap were vented, the gas from the right tank would KEEP crossing into the LEFT tank, until the levels equalized, which by that time, it would be coming out the cap, IF IT WERE VENTED. Make sense?

Back to the OP's ?. Yep, verify your crossovers are clear. Also, the screen on your petcock. Or jus' be a dough-head like some o' us, and run 'round on RES all the time. Yes Sir, TWICE this year, ALREDEEEEEEE !!!! And YEP, looked just like that guy, kicking cans whilst walking down da woad !!!

There is a crossover tube underneath the front of the tanks for fuel to pass from right to left. On top of the tanks, under the dash there is a vent line which allows air to pass from one tank to the other. The left cap is not vented, only the right cap. If the crossover line or the vent line is plugged, fuel won't flow from one tank to the other.

It's funny, for 17 years I've been filling the dual tanks on my FLSTN right tank first, then left. Now I find out I've been doing it wrong all these years. WTF? I always fill the right tank to the neck, cap the right tank, remove the left cap, then fill the left tank to 1" below the filler neck. I was told by an old timer that this was the way to do it. In 17 years, I've never overflowed a tank or had a problem doing it this way.

edit: looks like the Gumpmeister and I posted at the same time.

I fill the right side first on my FXSTC, then left. I stand the bike upright while filling the right, then it's on the kickstand while filling the left.
