I talked to a certified H-D mechanic the other day and he told me the Stage 1 download was a gimmick? He told me because I have the Vance & Hines Fuel Pack that I would be wasting my money to pay Harley for the $150 "Performance Download" because the fuel pack is doing the same thing. I am thinking he misunderstood my question as to if I needed it...when it was more of a want, if you catch my drift? It seems like my bike is running a bit lean by the look of the end of my pipes and the spark plugs. Should I just call V&H and ask for a better map or is the Stage 1 going to give me more performance, and also fix my lean problem? I am also confused as to why when you ask for a map you have to tell V&H if you bike has the Stage 1 if the mechanic is right?
When I put pipes and a SE a/c (stage 1) on my RK I got the factory stage 1 download. All it does is compensate for the leaner running from the aircleaner/pipes. The ECM (with download) and O2 sensors still limit you to running EPA lean.
I ended up getting a PCV for it (pre mapped) which also eliminates the O2 sensors and it is definitely running richer (and better!).
Your fuel pack probably just needs a richer map. Getting the HD stage 1 download would be a waste of money if your trying to richen things up, especially when you already have a fuel pack.
Fuelpak will try to work with you. Sometimes they can get it close. In my case the fp was good enough for a set of slipons. Once I put the 2-1 on, I had to get a pcIII. Give them a chance, but you'll probably want to upgrade.
Hey thanks guys! I have done a little more research and found out that all a stage 1 download does is advance the timing..which is also what your fuel pak does so the stage 1 is a complete waste. I hope I wont have to go to a different piggy back!

I don't believe the fuel pak can adjust timing. It can only increase fuel.
DO NOT get the download with a Fuel Pak, I had both and after much pain trying to get everything right it was discovered the two do not work well together for some reason. I had the Download first, was still not happy, added the fuel pak and could not get it dialed in even with V&H's help.
Dumped the fuel pak and bought a power commander III USB, now I am very happy with the performance.

I am in the same boat; bought a 2010 FLHTCU with the Stage 1 a/c and Screamin' Eagle slip-ons (the ones with the diffusion discs). It seems to be running just fine as-is. Do I REALLY need to invest in either a download or a PCV (don't want to burn a valve...)? The Service Mgr at my local HD dealer says do the download, forget the PCV (he really dislikes them; recommends a Fuel Pak if I must use a fuel management sys).
