After a big bore install on my 02 fatboy,I later devolped a chirping sound at decell.Like sitting at a red light slightly accell then at decell the top pipe(rear cylinder only)will chirp, rev up a little then at decell ,chirps again. Its driving me nuts!! I've had it back at my local HD for all tests done and nothing. The motor runs fine.
I have V&H Big Shot staggard with the power chamber on my bike. With my friends at Cat Eye Customs advice i pulled the baffles, heat shields etc.,Same thing.Well then i put on stock pipes.Same ole thing.Went back to HD and they tried a third set of pipes,Yup does it again.rev chirp, rev chirp. My buds have been burning my tail about it threatning to get me a yellow tweety tag.
The tech called the HD Maint. support line and was told that it was something i would have to deal with.As the motor seems fine.Plus this was not a right after the rebuild thing,it started about 500 miles later. One thing i'm wondering tho, is all three sets of pipes have the cross members between the pipes.Maybe something with that??
I've been wanting V&H Long shots without the power chamber ,but if i spent the bucks and it still did it, i'd never hear the end of it.If anyone has heard of something like this please let me know as it has every one baffeled around here,no pun intended.
Check your drive belt. Mine was driving me nuts with the chirping til I had the drive belt adjusted. It did not seem logical to me but it did fix the problem.

My rinehart does it on concrete. It's not the bike likely. It's the material the sound is bouncing off of. Search "angry crickets". I have a thread about it.

RFG,
Read your post ,Mine does it all the time, grass, gravel, road,.My bud just called and he still thinks its caused by the crossmembers between the pipes as i said all three had them, may be the airflow between the pipes? But as far as that, why it would start later on the ones i keep on my bike i dunno, but i do find it odd that you would get the same sound with three different sets of pipes.Heck i,m about to offer a reward to the person that figures this out, lol.
Take care,Rick
