The wife and I are planning a trip from Dallas to Baltimore to visit our daughter. I would appreciate some advice on "not to be missed" rides as we travel through Tennessee, Kentucky, etc. We'll probably try to route ourselves to Richmond, VA and then head north into Baltimore to avoid as much of the DC traffic as possible. As I look through the maps, I find tons of roads marked as "scenic". We need to keep a steady pace through to our destination, but could afford a few detours for some great scenery. We're not too interested in typical motorcycle challenges like the Dragon, but want to focus on scenery and pleasant rides. I knew this would be the best place to ask for opinions. So, please...help me plan a trip to remember. Thanks in advance. Gary
Richmond to DC huh... I live just north of Kings Dominion... exit 110 of I95. When is your visit? As I might be willing to take you around our area some if it fits my travel schedule. I unfortunately can't offer you my extra room... but if you need anything while up this way PM me and I will give you my cell phone #. There is some great Civil War history in the Fredricksburg area... BUT honestly if I was you, I would come up the western side of VA and hit the Blue Ridge Parkway and follow that into Skyline Drive (10 dollars for a 7 day pass). Take Skyline till the Northern exit and then head NE over towards Baltimore. It will take longer, but I think it's worth it. Skyline and BRP have 35 mph speed limits... so it is real easy going. Last weekend when the wife and I rode out of Skyline onto RT 33 and headed down the mountains it was like going from a stroller ride into a rollercoaster with the higher speeds... but I took it easy and it was fun.
There are other routes that are great riding just East of the mountains also that my dad and I used to take on SC trips vice the interstates when I was young. I grew up in MD and live in VA now and know most of the area fairly well. Feel free to PM me and I can probably tell you what you need to know about the area... Stay off I95 North of Fredricksburg, VA towards DC in the AM and vice versa in the PM rush hours... it's insanity.
