My 99 (evo) heritage quit today and I had to call backup with a trailer. It has 45k+ and today is her 1st trailer ride. She didnt like it... The engine started being a little noisy a couple of weeks ago and Ive been unable to pinpoint the noise. It was a weird knock, but not very loud. I figured Id just drive her & fix her when I knew what the problem is. Well today the noise got steadily louder then suddenly I lost electrical power and she died. Battery was dead. I assume the alternator quit charging causing the power loss and her to go dead and have a dead battery. My question is would the alternator going bad cause a knock? Im sure someone has ran into this. My bike has always been very dependable. I do my own service & repairs. Ive always ran amsoil and changed the engine every 5k. thanks for any insight!
Pop off the primary cover and you might be surprised if the stator decided to grenade on you. If that happened, no charge to maintain the battery. If the compensator broke then the pieces roliing around in the primary cavity tore up some stuff. I'd give the clutch pack a good looky look.
Ive always ran amsoil and changed the engine every 5k.
wouldn't it be easier to just change the oil every 5k?
i know, i'm a smartass, just couldn't help it.....
how old is the battery? after you either replace it, or charge it, get the bike started and put a multimeter across the pos and neg terminals. if you are reading app. 14 volts, then you should be good. if the voltage goes very high with rpms, your voltage regulator is not doing its job....
obviously there is more in depth testing that can be done, but thats a quick check....
The battery is a little over a year old. Its a deka. Im going to try to pull the primary today if I get time and I'll let yall know what I find. The bike has never had any kinds of electrical issues. When I rode the blue ridge pkwy a few weeks ago, a noise started, and I couldnt figure out where it was comin from. Maybe the knock and the charging thing is all one problem. Gottta get er goin. Too much good riding to do!
Ive started tearing her down. Question... Is the Compensating sprocket nut (Big 1 1/2" nut) left handed threads? I have the clutch hub mainshaft nut off. It was left handed. Just dont to put the mo-jo to it and break it. Any help is appreciated!!!
