On June 1st, I ordered a black 2007 Peace Officer Ultra, having no idea that there were so many changes in store for this model year (I have been on a BMW R1150RT for the past 3 1/2 years after selling a 2001 FLHTC).
The bike arrived at my dealer late Friday evening. They were kind enough to get it on the lift first thing Saturday AM and had it all ready to go that afternoon.
1st impressions:
The bigger motor puts out tons of heat compared to the 2001 Classic, not to mention my '92 Ultra.
The transmission shifts with eerie smoothness and the clutch effort is minimal. There is a bit of a whine in 5th, but nothing else.
Brakes are okay, but I am still getting used to not having servo-assisted and linked brakes (which I hated when I transitioned to them on the BMW). I have to remember that I'm stopping over 1/2 a ton with hydraulics only and to adjust my distances and speeds accordingly.
The stereo performs flawlessly (at least at time of this writing) and the quality of sound from the HD headset is acceptable (I use a full-face Arai).
No other bizarre noises, smells or sensations to note.
That the FL bikes still handle this well, even with all of the changes that have been made since I began riding HD touring bikes in the early 80's speaks volumes about the original design.
I feel like I have come home after a 3+ year absence! 240 miles on day one and the break-in service is scheduled for Thursday. Kudos to Mitchell's HD in Modesto for getting me on the road for the long weekend!
I'll get a pic posted shortly and thanks to all on this forum for keeping me entertained while watching my summer go by without a bike.
Congrats!
I just picked up my Peace Officer Edition Heritage yesterday. Hasn't rained in this part of Texas all summer until today, but I did get in about 50 miles yesterday. Great scoot. I must have been lucky because I ordered mine July 22 and it arrived at the dealer last Thursday. What's that, about five weeks? Anyway, ENJOY!
Congratulations on the new ride. I get a kick out of every review of a motorcycle that comments on how good the sound systems are. Hey, if they're going to stick them in there, they might as well have them perform at a high level.
Note however that the bike is just over 1/4 of a ton, not 1/2.
For those that don't know servo-assisted means ABS brakes, which by the way are hydraulic, and the assistance from the servo isn't for more stopping "Power" but quicker stopping without skidding the tires. It should be noted that if you drive around in any vechicle that has ABS and you note it's working , that it is either raining, snowing, or you are not stopping correctly. (could be wrong here, never had a BMW motor cycle, just going by what I've read)
Note however that the bike is just over 1/4 of a ton, not 1/2.
Actually John is right on the money. An ultra classic comes in around 840 lbs. With rider it's 1/2 ton or closer to 3/4 ton at GVWR. That is indeed something to think about when stopping.
At any rate, congrats John and enjoy the ride. Thanks for your review.
Congrats John on the new bike. Man are you lucky, my Firefighter Edition arrived at the dealer Friday as well, but I can't take delivery until Tuesday[:@] Enjoy your new ride!!!
