Default Got A New GPS Unit

A couple of pleasant surprises. Have never paid any attention to freebie points accumulating on my credit card since I pay it off every month and shred the statement. Got a notice from them that I could order from Amazon and a lot of other places and I had 19,870 points. Spotted a Garmin 1350T that was 19,700 points with free shipping. The second surprise? I ordered it on line Thursday afternoon then ordered a Ram mount from Ram, and a power cord setup from GPSgeek. Monday morning FedEx knocked on my door and handed me the Ram mount. Monday afternoon the post office jeep stopped by and handed me the Garmin and the power cord. UPS probably would have taken at least a week . The Garmin is a pretty nice unit and easily readable although I can't hear the voice directions when riding.

GPS's are nice...it's like having a talking map that you don't have to look at if you don't want to...plus there's alot more to them than just a mapping feature. Many are loaded up with all sorts of stuff like gas stations, restaurants, businesses...and you can download even more things.....so when you're somewhere unfamiliar, and you get hungry for say, Mexican Food, it'll tell you where the nearest Mexican Restaurant is and will talk you to it. I also have mine loaded up with MP3s so I can listen to music while I ride.....and if I'm routing somewhere I never have to look at it....it will interrupt my music with turn by turn directions....so I can enjoy the ride, music and scenery.

Nobody "needs" a GPS.....they're just a really useful and cool little device.

I ride a lot by myself and find myself out in the middle of nowhere in miles and miles of wheat fields. A wreck or breakdown would be a real problem trying to tell rescue where you are (hoping you have cell phone service). I can touch the screen on the GPS and it will show the map coordinates where ever I might be. If I'm getting a bit low on fuel another touch will bring up service stations. It will track gas mileage, maximum and average speed, run time, stop time and numerous statistics. A map is OK but a GPS is pretty nice to have. If I'm in a town looking for a specific business or place all I have to do is enter the address with the Qwerty keyboard and the unit will guide me from where I am to the doorstep of the business.

I have the same setup, except my Garmin is a 1300. It is the same case and so forth. I've used it on one road trip and I enjoyed the different features such as miles to go, time to next turn, estimated time of arrival, the trip log page, all of which appeals to the pilot in me. I was disappointed when I found out there was no external speaker jack to let me plug into the radio though. Then I would've been able to hear the prompts.

I find the screen a bit washed out in bright sunlight, and I need to buy a hood for it. Then I could at least see the directions displayed on the screen that the voice prompts would be telling me.

It is especially useful in unfamiliar circumstances. I've got a ride planned to Salt Lake City this weekend and the gps is already programmed to help me find the motel I've booked.

Just a gadget, yes, but a very useful one.

Do they make a hood for it? My experience with it at the moment is very limited but I can see that fingerprints on the touch screen will be a distraction.

I like taking the back roads and will ofter get lost - thats the fun of riding on a sunday when you have nowhere in particular to go.

I guess if I went on a really long ride for a week or something I would consider.

I ride exactly the same way....explore and get lost as all hell. Any interesting back road is fair game.

And when I'm done, if I haven't figured out where I am yet, I hit "Go Home" and it tells me how to get home.
