Thanks....that sure helps. The noise is for sure coming from that area and is the loudest by the nose cone.
Thanks again......

Sure enough....cam shoe broke in pieces...front one, mech. will also pull cam plate to inspect and replace both shoes and tension springs. HD also has come out with an upgrade for the tension springs.
On another note, what do think of the idea of running an breather hose and filter to allow the little extra oil throught the filter instaed of the throttle chamber ? Mech. is suggesting that I do that.

Old school. Still see some bikes vented to a filter and the atmosphere. Not the most environmentally correct thing to do but it does work. Your lucky you didn't trash your engine. Be sure and check your oil pump for wear before you put this bike back together. JMO but I wouldn't put that chain crap back in my bike even with the new tensioners----it is your bike fix it like you think is best.

A lot of people swear by the new style tensioners and polished chains. You will get lots of opinion on this but I went with gear drive and new cams. Got a boost from the cams but then I had to buy a tuner. Gear drive will not work if you have a lot of run out. I had to install a new oil pump. All that shoe trash had done a number on my machine surfaces in the pump. I wish I had bought and installed one of the aftermarket cam plates but hind sight is 20/20. The only thing that keeps me from building a bullet proof screaming engine that should run almost forever is economics. Not enough dollars for all the goodies so I pick what I think is the best bang for my bucks. Good luck on the cam chest rebuild---it is expensive.

Does this whining also occur when the old lady isn't riding with you?

The tensioners issue is a known problem in the 88's since they have came out..
Its been mentioned for YRs in here for owners to check them out starting around 25k-30k.

Be thankful that U didn't totally blown Ur motor..

Before the 07 HYD tensioners came out on the 96's, a lot of 88 owners went with Gear cams...???? Ur choice.. As said above just made sure Ur crank run-out is within specs if U decide to go gears......

or just go with the HYD system as it seems to have fixed the 88's problem...At least in the 4yrs Ive been reading in here, I dont remember
(1) 96'' motor that has had tensioners that wore out and caused a problem..
Mine at 17k when I did cams showed (0) signs of wear... still looked new...

Default Whinning noise primary side

Serious whinning noise front primary side following engine RPM. 2003 Fatboy TC88, 45K miles. Turned out to be the clutch hub bearing. Original symptoms where as follows. Noise present with clutch in or out, transmission in gear or neutral. With primary cover off noise was definetly coming from clutch area. Clutch bearing looked and felt OK while running on bike and on bench. Also confusing is that the clutch bearing components are all rotating together when clutch is engaged. Have always had a slight pulsation in clutch lever when in neutral and clutch lever engaged just enough to remove free play, suspect bearing worn due to this slight clutch hub runout, found a small burr on clutch hub to trans shaft mating surface. Changed clutch hub bearing and all is now OK. Also, Primary chain has always been properly adjusted and old cam chain tensioners previously replaced with hydraulic set.
