Default 2,000+ mile trip through New England.

Headed on a 2,000+ trip starting in Dayton, OH, going out to Gettysburg, PA. From there going up north of NYC and riding the coast up to Acadia National Park/Bar Harbor. Then going west across Maine and down the other side through Mew Hampshire, Vermont, New York State, PA, Cleveland and back home.
Anyone know of any good places to eat or stay along the way? Any traffic advice? Places you would recomend stopping at or seeing? Right now we have the trip planned out over 6 days. We have an extra day if we decide to use it.

I mentioned a similar ride to co-workers, I've been to the area before, a looong time ago in the cage.
Anyway, I've been told that there's a bar, The Whales Tale somewhere in the middle of town, in Bar Harbor ME that has the absolute best lobster roll.
Unfortunately, I won't get to find out until next May.
Lake Champlain in NY or Vt side is good riding, gorgeous area.
Route 30 (Lincoln Hwy) from Gettysburg toward Philly is a two lane stop and go PITA.
If you're in G-Burg the York Plant is probably some 15 miles away for a tour.
Cooperstown NY for the Baseball Hall of Fame.
I'm jealous as hell, enjoy and be safe!

I highly recommend that you ride Route 17 (Appalachian Mountain Gap) when passing through Vermont. The "App Gap" is one of the steepest and curviest rides in New England.

Acadia is a worthwhile stop for sure. Then take US 2 across into New Hampshire. The White Mountains are excellent riding. Mt. Washington is a must see. You can ride to the top or they have a bus that will take you up. It is NOT for those who have any fear of heights. Franconia Notch area is beautiful. Lots of clean friendly hotels in that area to spend the night. The Flume Gorge is a must see. There is also a Tram up Cannon Mountain. Between Mt. Washington and North Woodstock take route 112. Twisty winding scenic route that is great riding. As said by another poster Lake Champlain is beautiful. Route 3 through Lake Placid and on through the Adirondacks. Niagara Falls if you have never seen them is a worthwhile stop. I have to say though that 6 days will be a hectic trip. We did 12 days last year and it wasn't enough.

How far is it from the App Gap/route 17 to Smugglers Notch? Mapquest isn't able to find it.

Rt. 30 is a PITA with traffic but i just did this the other day. East of gettysburg is Rt 74 south and pick up Rt 372 east. It is a little bit longer but a lot better ride. 2 lane roads with hardly no traffic and a lot of farm land and Amish country. Rt. 372 will bring you back up to Rt 30 close to Chester County and PITA traffic but worth the detour. We stayed at the Courtyard Marriot and the Windham next to it. The Courtyard is cheaper plus there are 2 restuarants and a movie theater right there. Enjoy your ride and be safe.

I'm glad you mentioned Smugglers Notch which offers some great turns around huge boulders as well as amazing views. Smuggs is about a 45 minute ride up route 100 North from the intersection of Route 17 and 100. Along the way, you can stop by the Ben and Jerry's and take the factory tour. http://www.benjerry.com/scoop-shops/factory-tours/

The secret to the good views travelling RT 1 in Maine is to go down the penninsulas that jut out from RT 1 like fingers from a hand. There you will see the real Maine coast.

Here's a favorite New England coastal ride of mine....

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...bb70d0b847b369

It offers great seacoast views and good eating. It is basically Rte 1A and Rte 1B, which run alongside Rte 1 but along the coast, from the Mass/NH border to Ogunquit Maine. I have marked out a few restaurants that I have eaten at several times along the way. Watch for the signage for Rte 1B on the right a few miles after Rye Harbor. Also watch for signage as you enter city of Portsmouth NH where you'll get back onto Rte 1 briefly to cross into Kittery Maine. Then you'll hit Rte 103 on the right after Warrens Lobster Pound to take you along to the Nubble Lighthouse in York Maine.

I've also put a mark on Rte 1 a little further up for Bentleys Saloon. Make sure you stop there and post pics of you riding the hog. lol

Here are some rides in the White Mountain area of NH....

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...1d43a5ef763441

If your trip takes you through North Woodstock New Hampshire, YOU HAVE TO plan a lunchtime stop at Bill & Bob's Famous Roast Beef Sandwiches right on the Kancamangus Highway (Rte 112). Just trust me on this one...
