Default 5,000 Mile Service Fatboy Lo

I'm coming up on my 5,000 mile service maintenance and have several HD service centers as well as several bike shops in my area. I've called them all to get estimates on how much it is going to cost. It's been from $350 - $700 dollars. What's with the big discrepancy in prices? I just bought the HD 2010 Softail Service Manual (it's being mailed this week) from repairmanual.com

The reason I bought the manual is because I have a Wild1Chubby's black powder coated handlebars I want to install on the bike and want to do it myself.

Should I just wait to get the manual and do this myself? I'm fairly mechanical. I put my pipes and aircleaner on the bike myself. Is the manual fairly easy to read (understand). Will I need a bike stand?

Thanks for the help.

Do it yourself, what are we talking about? Changing fluids and checking belt tension?

i couldn't tell ya why the price range is so much different. maybe some were quoting synthetic oil, but that should only be about 50 bucks difference. that is a large difference. i usually have a shop perform the required services so i can get them to document for the warranty. after the warranty is gone, i do it myself. bar changes and exhaust and stuff i do as much as i can. up to you.

If you have the mechanical ability to change your own handlebars you can do your own service. It's probably easier than doing the bars. You don't need a lift to do it. It can be done on the garage floor or driveway. Your owners manual has a list of things to go over when you do it. Get the wrenches out and go over every nut and bolt on the bike to check for tightness. 5/8 socket will remove your drain bolts but it's easier to reinstall the tranny bolt with an allen wrench. Take your time, you'll enjoy saving the money and knowing it's done correctly.

Save your receipts and write down what you've done and your warranty will stay intact.

It's easy enough to do and you get more familiar with your bike. You should get in the habit of checking everything for tightness more frequently than every 5000 miles anyway.
