Default Scheduled Maintenance

What does the dealership do eveytime I take my bike in for service, besides changing the fluids? Am I supposed to pay 300 bucks everytime for anoil change and a look over? Is the first 1000 mileservice anabsolute requirement to keep the warranty in force?

Yep, the first 1000k service is a warranty excuse to relieve you of 300 bucks. Just wait until you hit 10k, and 20k. I think they change out the fork on the 20k.

dude, get a manual, and do it yourself.

I realize not everyone wants to do that, but its a great way to learn a little about your bike. The checklist for service inervals is in the manual, and everything on the checklist is detailed out.
Do do the job right, you probably need a couple hundred bucks in tools - bike lift, torque wrenches, and a few other little things. The cost of one service is more than the cost of the tools you need to do it your self.

As far as warranty goes, just keep all reciepts. I created my own service record in Excel that I update every time I do anything to the bike.

I absolutely agree! I'm not taking my bike back to have them change the fluids and check the chain tension and lube the cables ... Screw that! I am doing my own 15,000 servie next weekend and my buddies 20,000 service. I jsut have my front end changed out so the seals and fluid are done in the forks! By the time I bought 6 zuarts of oil a filter gaskets and two new spark plugs it cost me $77 and some change. Beats the hell out of payin gthe stealer a couple hundred!

I got a Clymer manual off of Amazon and it is very detailed. After looking at it I couldn't believe how easy it is to do it yourself!

The 1000K mile service does NOT have to be done by the dealer for warranty purposes. Service writers and salesmen slip that one in all the time. I crack up watching them turnred whenI call them on it.

Not much besides sit on it and ***** around with the buttons and stuff (well I shouldn't say that, they are not all like that but a lot of them are) If you can find a good dealer and trust the service department then go for it....someone like shovelheadbob is stand up but I have seen some scumbag technicians

More than .02 cents worth. Excellent advice and hundreds of dollars worth. Been wrenching since I was a kid on dirtbikes and I think it will even make you a better overall rider to understand the mechanics of your scoot.

There is a list of adjustments and checks in the service manual.I doughtthat some of the dealers do all that is req'd.I can testify to that after the dealer did the 1K on my bike.

after reading this, I will be getting the manual. Im 23 and I figure 40 years from now I'll know these bikes in and out. Might as well start turning wrenches now.
