I am planning on building a Baja Bug as a project. So I start pricing everything. Parts are real cheap for air cooled VWs. A complete exhaust header is under $200. I was like WTF??
I guess it's supply and demand.
Actual performance bicycles and parts for them can get really expensive. I mountain bike also and my mountain bike is in the $2000 range and that's about an average price for a decent full suspension bicycle. The prices keep climbing as the bikes get more exotic like in the $5-6k range.
all you guys bitchin are probaly the big bellies rideing your hogs, and bitchin about h.d. prices ect at least guys peddalin are in shape, i have both rode the peddler 25 miles and h.d 150 miles guess what no belly
i don't care how in shape, or out of shape you are. those prices for parts are damned expensive. look at it this way, you can almost buy an 883 for the price of that bicycle. or 1/2 the cost of a 1200. that isn't expensive? i want your job then.

^^This. A 300 dollar bicycle from WalMart is not going to cut it for someone who is into mountain biking or road biking. A good local bike shop is worth it's weight on gold. They'll set you up properly.
Look at some of the road bicycles coming in at close to 10K. They are available for anyone to buy, but unless you are Lance Armstrong it is overkill. The bike, however, is freaking SWEET. All carbon fiber. Fully setup, you can lift it with ease with 1 finger.
To each his own. I sold my cyclocross bike earlier this year. I'd like to pick up another bicycle ... and I would still go Canondale or Giant, personally. Not a 300 dollar WalMart or Sears special.
I remember back in about '96 buying some suspension forks for my Marin moutain bike. They cost Ł400. That was Ł150 more than my then motorbike (a Honda CB100N, which also had suspension forks, and rear end, and a motor.....)
