I don't know about other areas of the country but here in So Cal I have had a hard time finding any MSF Advanced courses. If you follow the links on the MSF website it simply leads you to the basic course registration. A couple of years ago I finally got someone on the phone and they took my name and number and put me on a list but I never heard back from them.
I have been riding for 46 years but I want to take the advanced course just because I think as I get older, my reaction time and skills decline and I want to do all I can to keep the odds in my favor. Has anyone else had trouble locating classes?
From: Dallas, TX & Santa Fe, NM when I can find the time....
It can be difficult to fill an Advanced Class. I ran into the same thing here in Dallas. They are few and far between and sometimes don't "make". You might try contacting several MSF/Rider's Edge schools (again) and letting them know you want to take a class and to put you on a list (again) to call when they might get enough students to warrant a class. You might also use google in addition to the MSF website as there may be other schools out there.
If you have a friend or two also willing to take the Advanced class, you might let the schools know that as well. I did that and the fact 2 of us were willing to sign up together, the class we ended up taking "made" rather than getting cancelled from lack of students. If you have a few riding buddies interested in taking the class, you might even try asking if they'd put on a class for your group.
In the interim, pick up a copy of the "Ride Like a Pro V" DVD and do some practice until you can find a class. It's a great tool. HOG groups may also get together and sponsor/put on a Skilled Rider class & are another avenue to look into.
Hey thanks guys (and gals) for the replies. I did a search and found a couple of Riders Edge courses. One in San Diego and the other in Lancaster. Both about 90 miles away. A bit farther than I wanted to travel considering it is pretty much an all day event but not really all that bad.
Those of you who may know, how does the R/E course stack up with the MSF and does the R/E certificate qualify for insurance discounts as the MSF does?

R/E is built on the same curriculum as MSF - they use the same range cards/drills. Often times, you'll find R/E Instructors also teach MSF classes as well. Here in Texas, many R/E Instructors actually work for both a H-D Dealer and a MSF school. SO, assuming your insurance co. gives discounts, you'll get one for taking the R/E class.

Here in NC, it's also difficult to drag the information out of the local community college's web site.... but I sent an EMAIL to the person in charge, and got a nice note back, listing the available dates.
Out of the 12 students, 7 of them were folks I know. We had a BLAST..
Regarding the Rider's Edge, and MSF classes... the only difference is.. COST... with the local RE class being twice the cost... although, the local dealerships will "throw in the class" if you buy a bike
If you do a riders edge class H.O.G. will send you a $50.00 gift card when you submit the form they ask for. Can be done once a year, you have to be a member before the class.
