You're measuring the effectiveness of the sirens by the speed at which the truck gets from point A to point B.... I'm measuring it by whether or not it alerts me to a huge heavy speeding truck, which it does.
Read the link. The non-L&S ambulances were, "instructed to obey the speed limit, traffic laws, and traffic signs." In other words, the non-L&S ambulances were not speeding.
And, as far as L&S alerting people to the ambulances, the study also points out that, "There are many reports of ambulance crashes during L&S responses and transports resulting in injuries or deaths, and dollar costs. It has been estimated that as many as 12,000 emergency medical vehicle crashes occur each year in the United States and Canada as a direct result of L&S use."
In other words, L&S causes accidents.
Generally it's best to actually read a study before attempting to criticize it.
I like the part about Nerve Shattering and Frightening to young children...Check and Check, part of the reason I ride a harley and they would love to ride one to if theyd just buck up and admit it.
..."low-class smarmy American patriotism"
That should win them lots of support.
+1
Eventually they'll tuneup their site, though, and gather more support from others who are angered by what they truly consider to be an invasion of their rights and privacy.

You're right, but we are unable to police ourselves. So...
Our increased taxes go towards paying our lawmakers to write these new laws and to create new LE jobs to enforce those laws.
If there are more accidents when ambulances are running L&S than when they are not and if other variables are accounted for, then L&S is the proximate cause. There's no other way to read it. Reality is very often counter-intuitive like that.

Are you saying that L&S does not alert people to oncoming emergency vehicles?
It looks as though you're saying: L&S causes accidents, therefore L&S does not alert people to oncoming emergency vehicles.

I read the study. I draw different conclusions because I'm not so eager to prove a point that I'm willing to string together loosely related conclusions and estimates in an article from 1995.
I know the noise issue is nothing new and I agree that there are some super obnoxious idiots out there ruining it for all of us, but it's this group's holier-than-thou attitude and choice of words that I have a real problem with.

I am not sure what people expect but fire truck and ambulance sirens work well. It is the lack of mirror use after they hear a siren and just how close you get before they react that sometimes doesn't work well. People react in many different ways and at different distances depending on when they hear the siren--when they spot the vehicle with the siren---and what they will do once they decide there is a vehicle with a siren requesting them to get the hell safely out of the way. I always like that surprised look on their faces when they finally see the fire truck behind them. Then I have to watch for them just hitting their brakes instead of moving over.
I've had people pull out or make a left turn right in front of the truck.
I've seen people make a U-turn to follow the first truck, without even noticing the ones behind it.
I've had people try and get off the road so fast that they almost caused accidents. I've had people stop right in the middle of the road, people slow down in the middle of the road looking for a place to pull off, little kids run out into the road to see the fire truck. I've followed cars for a mile or more before the driver realized the truck was behind them.
My point is that the sirens points forward, people ahead of you should hear them, even when they do you can never really be sure how they will react.
The lights and sirens are not a replacement for defensive and alert driving.
I think the key word in that bit of fluff was " overbearing " a bit two sided to my way of thinking and I left them with that thought in a post .
As for the loud pipe thing I was guilty years ago of straight pipes , have hearing lose because of them .
This isn't a fabbed tale , a bunch of the local overaged ( well over 40+ ) wanna be bad asses around here got together made up their little patch club and at a meeting or " Church " as they call it made it a club rule to only have Thunderheaders on the bike you ride while flying the colors , I **** you not . All these posin pin heads do is ride in a group from bar to bar locally rapping hell out the pipes constantly . Saddest group " Dig Me " I've ever seen and now the local PD is busting everyone's ***** as direct result of this .
There's a balance on pipe sound , whats good and people will hear and then there's what 90% of riders do Louder means they gonna " Dig Me " .
