I don't believe in stopping traffic. But as far as the OP is concerned, I'd be pissed too.
In the old days, it seemed like a normal approach, and everybody was cool with it.
30 years later, the bike population has exploded and people are less patient. My views have changed. I think it is a poor and dangerous practice in our current climate. Unless it's a huge run for a great cause and includes police traffic control,..... otherwise they should send you on your way to meet at specific places and you should NOT be pressured in any way to blow stop signs or race thru yellow lights.
Blocking a lane with your bike, gives the other riders a false sense of safety and encourages them to enter a "trap" where they can get killed.
1994 was the last big MDA run I went on, and that is exactly the reason why I stopped. Poor traffic control in a chaotic environment.
I know that I'm in the wrong for blocking traffic . . .
. . . I know I don't have the right to block the road but I wonder if he does the same thing to funeral processions?
Difference being you had no right to block traffic, but in every place that I know of, funeral processions have the legal right to block traffic.
Was he acting like a jerk, yes, but so were you. Two wrongs don't make a right, but his wrong doesn't change the fact that you were wrong, and your actions were equally dangerous by illegally and recklessly disrupting traffic.
I was not equally as dangerous nor was I reckless. Illegal yes. Is a pedestrian dangerous and reckless if they cause traffic to stop because they're crossing the street at an intersection . Is a car holding up traffic while waiting to turn left reckless and dangerous?
I was sitting in the lane preventing cars from driving. I didn't cut anyone off. When I pulled out there were no cars coming.

It's illegal BECAUSE it's reckless and dangerous. Pedestrians have a legal right to cross the street at an intersection. Cars that enter the intersection while the light is green have a legal right to complete the turn. These are legal actions that other drivers are expecting.
However, no one is expecting you to illegally block an intersection and create an unnecessary traffic hazard.
The reality is you did create a traffic hazard, and you selfishly did it for the convenience of you and your friends with complete disregard for everyone else out on the road.

I don't agree that it was a hazard while he was standing there.
But if a car goes around him, it becomes a hazard. Especially to the bikes riding by that 'think' the intersection is safely blocked.
