I never had a problem with Shell super untill a few months ago.I always thought Shell was better, until it became obvious something was wrong.I thought just maybe the one station I fill at.Tried another about 60 miles from town, never thought about it until the pinging started ,again.Won't touch the crap anymore.Phillips 66 or Conoco runs like a dream, both bikes.
I run mid grade most of the time in my Harley and it has no sign of knock unless I let it lug. I have 10.5 to 1 compression, a little more than a stock aircooled 96 inch. When it is hot around here, I do fill 'er up on hi test.
If a stock low compression Harley engine is properly tuned, I think it is just a waste of $$ to throw hi-test in the tank. JIMO.
Seems like most people having problems are in Oklahoma. Maybe a regional problem? I would call and bitch and see what they have to say. I know there are different refineries around the country.
Many folks do not realize that gasoline content is regulated across the country by both EPA and CARB regulations. Besides the obvious RVP "seasonal" variations in fuel, some states mandate the use of Calif. reformulated Gasoline. ( and yes is has less energy per gallon than Fed. regulated fuel)
From memory California reformulated fuel is also used many North East "New England" states, and a few others.
Also regional "RVP" regulated fuels are sold "out of season" in some areas. Those "out of season" RVP fuels can and do cause drivability issues as well as variations in fuel economy! ( Texas, and Houston is particular, being a delivery point for fuel tankers, have traditionally had "poor" fuel quality available, as this "out of season" fuel is dumped when seasonally requirements change. I can remember taking fuel samples from Houston that were as high as 15 RVP (winter fuel) in the middle of summers hot Texas months!) The converse is also true when low RVP type fuels are sold in colder months. Spring and Fall are also times of the year when requirements (RVP)are changing and the chance of getting improper fuel requirements are very high!
