What about helmets for kid on bicycles? I bet less kids ride bikes today because of the nannystatisim. Little fat ba$tards.
many years ago my youngest refused to wear a helmet and would rather run along with her friends on theirs bike than put a lid on...she was in fantastic shape that summer

I agree, its usually the young bucks on rice rockets not the old guys. Here you can write a test for a bike license at 16 yrs of age and head down to the dealer and get on something that will go 0 to 100 in 3 sec with ZERO experience
I believe it should be the riders choice, that being said, I always wear a helmet when ever I am in state that does not require one.
I do support the legislation that requires minors to wear a helmet, some parents are just too stupid protect their children.
there it is right there......THIS is how it should be...and to go a step further...make it a choice provided the rider purchases extra health insurance to offset any medical bills in case of an accident.
this is the way it should be up here too.
there was a letter to the editor in our local paper last week about this very thing after we've had a couple deaths on the Island involving a bicycle and another accident involving a motorcycle. I'll try to find it and put it up here.....I wrote a response to that letter.....waiting for the paper today to see if it made print.

I've been a rider for over 25 years. Until 2 weeks ago it was always on a sports bike. Age and I hope wisdom have slowed me down, not the Road King. I wear a helmet every time I ride. This goes back before there was a helmet law in California.
I choose to wear a helmet and I oppose the helmet law for adults. I always wear seatbelts when I drive a car, but I oppose the seatbelt law for adults. The law should require children to wear helmets and seatbelts. I'm an adult and able to make informed decisions. The government should stay out of my life.
When I was young and rode a sportsbike I wore a helmet, boots, gloves, and a jacket with armor. But how safe was I at 80 over the limit on a mountian road? What is that protective gear really going to do for me if I go down at that speed. I'm probably safer now with just a helmet and going the limit.
To get the answers we have to look at more than the raw numbers. We need to see the whole picture.
Last year, one of our good friends (42yo) had a motorcycle accident in Mercer County not wearing a helmet. He had several non life threatening injuries including a concussion. The hospital in Mercer PA decided to fly him to Allegheny Gen. in Pittsburgh because they are better equipped for treating head trauma. When the hospital did a brain scan, they discovered a brain tumor the size of a golf ball. They removed the tumor 2 days later. My friend had no symptoms whatsoever, no headaches, nothing. If he was wearing a helmet, he probably wouldn't have suffered a concussion but he would have had a stroke sooner or later, according to the surgeon who removed the tumor.
So what does that tell you?
Are you suggesting that riders shouldn't wear a helmet so that when they get in accidents they are more likely to be brain scanned so their golf ball size tumors will be found? You really should listen to yourself.
To me it tells me of a 1 in 1,000,000 incident. I think I'll wear a helmet and gamble on better odds.
Personally, I wear a helmet..but I have ridden without one when I was much younger....I don't believe a law on this subject can be written that will please everyone who rides....I believe a helmet saved my life six years ago when I joined the "Been Down Club" ...again only my two cents worth.... Since then I value my Noggin a whole lot....bigal v

I didn't suggest anything. I just related a true story and let people draw their own conclusion.

It's not against the law to kill yourself so why should it be against the law to risk getting your head smashed in by not wearing a helmet?
But one thing I'll never get is how states like PA and others can require drivers to wear seatbelts but not also require bikers to wear helmets. Doesn't make a lick of sense.

In every region where the helmet law has been revoked there is a corresponding increase in fatalities from head injuries. No surprise there.
Funny, your statement contradicts the actual statistics. There were even links to the actual numbers and analysis in this thread before your post. But don't let facts get in the way of a good rant...
