Exclamation Special construction question.

So I am buying this beautiful 2005 special construction bike from a private party tomorrow and I want to know everything I should ask for. The bike is already registered so I don't think there will be a problem with that but I do know that I need to make sure that the numbers on the bike (frame cases tranny )match the title. Right?

This isn't the first bike I've ever bought but the first from a private party and it's special construction to boot so I don't want to make any mistakes.

Any kind of checklist would be appreciated.

Registration, bill of sale, title, what other kinds of applicable paperwork should I ask for?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

Does "special construction" mean a salvage rebuilt bike?

Thats what you need and make sure all the numbers match from the bike to the title.
There maybe a special tag from DMV attached to the frame.

Maybe your states DMV website may help or check with the police,etc-.

No Special Construction means just that, like a Paughco Frame with an S&S motor installed that was assembled by a person that does less than 25 a year, if I remember correctly and every state has different parameters that will define the Special Construction. Insuring one can be a real pain in the butt too. The manufacture's statement's of origin(frame and engine MSO's) is used by the original purchaser to obtain the title so if he still has those to give you that would help in case of any disputes with the DMV.

Check all the receipts for all the parts, checking with the cops and dmv were good ideas also.

Check all the numbers on the bike... frame, motor, trans...any numbers not listed on the title he should have a "manufacturers certificate of origin" for that part...unless he built it out of used stuff. Having those could be very important if you try to sell or register in another state. Insurance will be a major pain because they cannot look up the value in any book. If you are not getting a screaming deal, I wouldn't mess with it.

If the bike is tagged and Titled, mainly checking numbers and paperwork, tags, insurance and inspection sticker.
Be aware! If the bike does not have a Title and just has Certificate of Orign for the Frame and Motor, BEWARE. Every state is different, but if your trying to Title a "Shop Built" bike you bring it to the Dept of Public Safety, they unload the bike, take all your supporting paperwork and check every number on that bike. The burden of proof lies with YOU. If you don't have a receipt for every part on that bike, It's theirs till you can prove where every part originated.
Just don't let the Eye Candy cloud your thinking!

Well the bike is registered currently so that means at some point it was passed by the DMV. As late as last year I would assume. I guess that's a start

In Wash State it would have a tag attached to the frame that matches the title.

I was told that this bike has a title by the person who built it. It says that it gives the year as 2005 and it calls it a SPCN.

So should I be able to ask for all the paperwork on the bike or rather do I need all the original papers for the parts and such?

Also, where should all the numbers be, on the title?
