IMO it is not loud pipes going down the freeway, or even through town at rush-hour.
It is the jack-asses that roll through suburban residential areas at 11:00pm in 1st gear at 3kRPM, that are bringing this down on us....
Hell, when I come home to my RUB-estate late after a night out, I sometimes will run in 3rd, and "clutch-it" all the way into my garage... just to keep the noise down. Funny thing is, I am not a particularly compassionate or thoughtful person, but I don't want any "drama" in my neighborhood... been there, done that... not worth it.
I agree.... you guys talk about pipes but what about bikes like mine with a lot of motor and head work? Some of us need our engines to breathe so I am with Matt. I see these weekend warrior dudes reving at lights, rolling in first gear like they were riding a tractor at a pull event, etc.... it's ridiculous.
Frankly I think we forgot that as part of being free is also to be free to make our own choices in life but like it was noted here we were bred to answer for our own mistakes and much of that idealism is dead now in America with the popularity of pointing blame and using it in a lawsuit. It's a damn shame, but we are doing this to ourselves.
I even use to run in a lot of events for charities and even find myself straying from that now because of the popularity it has with those really shiny low mileage road warrior machines. Can't even remember the last toy run I attended.

+1
Freedom does not mean, the right to do anything, without repercussions.
Buddy of mine and I were talking about air-travel.... he went on a rant about America being free, and he should not have to submit to TSA... I said, "no man, what you have a right to do, is use another form of transportation... car, bus, train, walk, or get your own damn pilot's license..."
There is freedom to do what you please, but everyone forgets that freedom ends, when it infringes on another's Inalienable Rights..
Freedom w/o regard for one another... that ain't freedom, that there's anarchy...
Yup, Dennis the menace grew up and bought a Harley and it has Screamin' Eagle pipes that were EPA nixed the month after I bought them. I kept the old ones though cause I've been around long enough to know that everything changes. Cops, there are more cops per capita in Wichita than almost anywhere else in the land of the free. This holiday weekend a goodly number of those puplic servants will be manning speed traps along highway 54 from the East end of Sedgewich county to the western edge of Wichita. These persons will be paid overtime wages by a grant from the State. So much for the end of bigger government and smaller police presence.
Noise?? Every Spring until late fall I have to listen to Lawnmowers. Dawn until dark. I live in the land of the lawn all of a sudden. These idiots mow, edge and weed whip for hours. Their lawn mowers are as loud as some bikes. I may warm my bike up for 5 mins or so, but then I am gone. These people take hours to mow a 80'x200' lot with a house and driveway with garage on it. I keep my place nice. The one guy cuts his grass 3 times a week. I can cut mine twice a month and it looks good. Talk about noise pollution. Go bother these people with your f@#kinfg decibel meters. I should start a law suit. My one neighbor said " That Harleys a little loud isn't it? " I replied " Maybe but not for a damn hour like your lawn mower, which buy the way is loud as hell". She just walked away.
