Operating the bike in too HIGH of a gear, causing TOO low engine RPM's for the speed or the load being put on the engine ..... say maybe climbing a steep grade in too high a gear. You can feel a shudder thruout the bike of heavy. low frequency vibes as the engine struggles thru each stroke. Easier probably to experience "detonation" or knock when lugging the engine.

I thought it was when you are going too slow for the gear you are in... and you rev it back up to speed... you know that chugging lugging that happens until you get the proper speed.

I might be wrong.

Mate the only stupid question is the one that isn't asked......

Centerline and Grf000 provided the answer. I'll just say it's not a good thing to do and you will know it when it happens.

I'm fairly certain anyone with experience driving a stick shift (car or motorcycle) would have to be familiar with the dangers of over lugging your engine. But I will tell you what, most of these young kids raised driving only an automatic would have no clue what you are talking about.

Kind of sad really.

It's the noise the tractor makes when you try to start off in fifth gear with 18 feet of cultivator planted.

Generally I like to stay 2k or more in 4th, 5th and 6th..

some built motors I read have to keep it higher to prevent spark knocking.
