RE: Encountered Deer on the Hog + Do Loud Pipes Save Lives
To reduce your chances of having an encounter with a deer, I suggest you install a deer whistle on your bike. These are small whistles that create a sound much like a dog whistle that will freeze a deer in its tracks. This prevents the deer from jumping out onto the road at ther last minute which is how most accidents occur. One regional Halliburton office was averaging 75 truck/deer accidents each year and after they installed deer whistles on all trucks that average dropped to 2.
You can find these whistles at most auto parts store at a cost of under $5.

I guess it it can't hurt. When the bike was new it had the stock shotguns on. Three deers ran out in front. Just a couple weeks back, I notice what looked like a couple big dogs at the side of the road just out side of town. As I neared I saw it was two young deer. I not only cracked on the pipes. S.E. 2/1. But also blew the horn. No response. In fact they actually waged their little tails and continued munching whatever they had found at the roadside.

One of the northern state highway patrols did a test on the deer whistles and found that they didnât work. They hit more deer with the cars equipped with the whistle than the ones with out. Do a search and you can find the article. George

If you think loud pipes, loud horns, deer whistles, or anything else helps prevent hitting deer, go ahead and use them, but I'd advize that you still ride as though the deer will run into your path. They frequently will because they are unpredictable.

I ain't so wise. I've just seen many times that deer will react differently to identical situation. Sometimes they freeze. Sometines they run away from the noise. Sometimes the run right at the noise. Who knows what (if anything) the deer is thinking about. All I know is that they will do crap you did not expect.

A magnum buck almost took me out yesterday at 6 am. It was dark and the thing came out of nowhere. Hit the brakes hard and missed it by less than 10 feet. It looked as big as a moose.
