Default Mechanical speedometer help needed

Ive got a 1936-40 style face speedo on the fxr that I have to replace because the trip reset **** broke off inside. No reed switches, strictly mechanical.

What would be the best way to bring the mileage up to match the old one? 31,000 miles.
I was thinking about hooking an old cable up to a drill and just letting it spin around until it got there. Any experience with this?

Default Maybe you won't have to replace the whole unit.

Have you gotten a good look at what's left of the trip reset **** shaft inside the housing?

Sounds like someone attempted to lift the speedo out of it's housing with out taking the trip **** off first.

I'm going to guess there's still a piece of the (broken) plastic trip **** shaft attached to the metal shaft inside the casing. They bolt together with a #1 Phillips head screw and require a tiny #1 phillips screwdriver with a long thin shaft to reach deep inside to remove / replace that screw.

I hope it turns out to be that easy.
