Tune or Not to Tune - That is the Question

My local Indy is bending my ear about tuning my stock 2010 StreetGlide. He feels adding the Screaming Eagle tuner and two hours of dyno for $700 is something I should do regardless if I replace the a/c and stock pipes or not. I think he is yanking my zippers on this one. What possible benefits would doing this provide me without making changes to a/c and exhaust?

No he's not...Stock bikes are running very lean, 15 or 16 to 1 Air/Fuel ratio. Lean means hot. Ideally these motors like 13.5 to 14.5 to 1, and that's what the tuner, ( or a Stage 1 download from the dealer,) does. And changing out the pipes or A/C is indeed optional. It'll warm quicker, run cooler and give you a little more power.

Stiggy,

Pretty sure I read here more than once that the Stage 1 download from the Dealer is of no value by itself. Understand about the EPA lean condition and less heat would definately be an improvement.

Yeah, it's been s few years for me with older downloads, ( see ancient FLTRSEI, ) but surely the tuner would accomplish your goal.

So pretty much what you're saying is his work is slow and he needs $$?

It can't do both...

Uhh, yes, it can...more fuel at cold brings the bike out of enrichener mode quicker, and ( as we all know,(?) ) lean engines run hot when warm, right?

It's funny how we change just about anything and everything on our bikes to make them faster, pull harder, look prettier. But when this guy's Indy just advises him to put the motor back to the Air/Fuel ratio that the engineers designed it to run at, ( before the EPA stepped in,) suddenly he's ripping him off. I respectfully disagree.

I agree with Stiggy but think a SERT and dyno time is excessive for an otherwise stock bike.

I would consider something like Xiads maybe if you are not planning to change pipes/AC.
