Want to put together my own tool kit. 2010 softail - are the bolts metric or american (not sure american is right term?) Any recommendations on most used sizes. Thanks in advance for your help.

SAE sizes. yeah, putting together your own kit is a good way to go. i started with a cruz tools kit and replaced a bunch of the stuff that came in it because the handles were too short on some of the torx and allen wrenches.

Try and find one of these at your local dealership and get all the sizes so you can make your own toolkit at a fraction of the price.

+1. That's what I did. Also, everything's SAE (American) except the battery cable bolts. They're 10mm.

Another tip, go to ebay and find a tool rool pouch. Then just roll em up and throw the pouch in your saddlebags.

I've got one of these:

As well as a a teardrop nylon pouch for my softail toolboxes that hold some other tools.

Just bought a Slime mini-compressor at Wal mart, yesterday, to go with my tire plug kit.

My tool kit fits in my back pocket... Visa and/or M/Card and a cell phone. Hasn't failed me yet... but then again, niether has my bike....

When I was younger and had a ragged out vehicle, I carried tools. Now that I have something reliable, I don't need tools, except a cell phone and credit card. After all this is the year 2011 not 1970.
