So I just ordered my 2012 Fat Bob and I originally included the 5 year extended service plan. I still have time to change it, and looking at how it adds an extra thousand bucks to the price, am not thinking that I need that much coverage. So you guys that have bought new bikes what do you think do I need the extra coverage or is the standard 2 year enough? What did you guys do?
Thanks for the help guys. I think I'm gonna pass on it. I like to turn all my own wrenches on everything I own. I'm no mechanic but between the manual and forum I think I can get most stuff done. I also like to install all my own goodies so if that's gonna void the warranty anyway i'll just keep my 1000 bucks for pipes and air cleaner.
Your aftermarket parts do NOT void warranty, unless teh aftermarket part causes teh issue. IE, tehy cannot void your warranty on a faulty brake caliper if you installed aftermarket pipes.
i had an 07 RK with the 4 year extended plan. My bike was just over 2 years old when something in the crank case went bad. Mechanic found metal shavings while during the service on it. I had rinehart true duals, PCIII, big sucker intake. HD covered the repairs minus the 50 deduct. I'm not sure if those add ons should have changed anything, but they didn't. total cost with labor over $600.00.

No, but your bike WILL sit while they drag their feet taking f-o-r-e-v-e-r for a resolution. With the engineers they have on hand to prove things, who do you think a judge or mediator will side with? I get what you are saying and I have understanding of M/M but unless it is very easily delineated like the situation you have outlined the chances are the consumer will lose.
Really conflicted on this. My warranty runs out next February 2012 and the months ahead offer little or no riding until then. The last of my warranty will run out with the bike sitting in the garage. So far I have had minor warranty claims on my bike which is still stock all the way around. Just waiting for the compensator or something to go has me thinking maybe I should purchase the extended warranty before its to late. I have about 22K on the bike now and plan on keeping it for the long-haul and racking up some mileage. I can see me easily putting 50 to 60K miles on it before I let her go. Thinking it might put me ahead of the game if I do the extended warranty while I still can. Its a gamble either way.
My 5 year plan has paid for itself 3 times over. Just the tire coverage has paid for the whole plan. Three tires replaced free ,one with 90 mile towing. Add to that a tranny main shaft bearing, broken fairing brackets, bad lifters and a bad compensator that also took out the rotor and stator. and I still have a year and a half left on the warranty. I do however put around 30 K miles a year on the bike. For a sunday rider who puts on less then 10K Mi. a year , it might not be worth it.

I agree with the 10K mile a year rule of thumb.

Sure there are some winners. However, odds are in favor of the house and against you getting the value of the premium in repairs. Extended warranties are big money makers for dealers of all types. I never buy them...not for cars, motorcycles, refrigerators, computers, or anything else. I have never once had occasion to regret walking away from an extended warranty. It's not that I am lucky. It's that the posters for whom it paid off were the unlucky minority.
Think about it. There wouldn't be extended warranties if they paid out more than the took in.
