Never bought it and have never had any problems. I'm on my 4th Harley. One main reason I'd never buy one, besides I think they're over priced, is if my bike needs work I can't do, I take it to an indy. I do not like the dealership service dept.

The one time I bought one it paid off big time. We bought a Nissan pick up (wife wanted it, I hated the idea) and we bought the warranty, the truck was a turd and she hated it. We switched vehicles and I told her it needed to go. We traded it in less than a year so we received credit on the warranty.....twice!!! We deposited the check so we could pay it back but they refused. We fought with the company that backed the warranty and they couldn't understand that we were paid out twice. We sat on the money for nearly two years expecting to get a bill but never did. Never again will I buy one, odds are good it isn't a good move.

you can buy the 3 year extended plan right before the original 2 years is up. i wish i had done so. my '09 RK is two months out of warranty...started knocking pretty bad on trip to key west. took bike to dealer when i got home to south texas...noise is probably piston slap. there is "excessive wear" in most of the motor. bike was serviced at dealer on schedule and always used synthetics in all 3 holes. the bike has 46k on it-was told when i bought it that it should go 100k with no major problems.
waiting for call from dealer when they finish taking motor apart...will probably be doing a 103 bore and replacing all the worn parts. had a 255 cam put in at 42k and was really enjoying the increased torque and ease of riding the bike...no way that the cam is the culprit-way too many worn parts...scoring in cylinders, etc.. going to bite the bullet and get it repaired. dealer is going to sell me a warranty for an additional 2 years at a good price. i will get rid of bike right before the warranty is up.
if you are going to ride a lot of miles---buy the extended warranty. shop around for the best price...there was a price difference of $400 between the highest and lowest prices i was quoted by the various dealers in my area. JMO

I went with it for the following reasons when getting an '11 SG , ( my first new HD I ever had)

I keep my bikes for a long time.
I keep my drivetrain and exhaust stock on 'Glides. - my FXR and Sporty I ran loud pipes, cams, carb jet kits, ingitions, shaved the heads, blah, blah, blah.
I have a solid dealer that I get along with very well.
I spent decades wrenching, now the dealer does the 1k, 5k, 10k work , of course I check it over, but I'm using them for all of it and if there is a problem , it's all stock and they did all the service so my chances of being denied a claim are f*cking slim.

That might not be what you want out of your new ride, so I'd reccomend your work with your dealer up front, tell him what you want to do with the bike and see what he'll cover in terms of mods and then go from there.

If you are financing the bike & the plan cost can be rolled into the monthly payments where you don't feel it, I'd say yea;definitely. If you're paying cash, then it's a toss up. I just bought an '07 RoadKing this past July with a transferable warranty. Well,3 months later my cases needed to be split right down to the crank 'cause they weren't sealed properly at the factory. My total cost out of pocket was $50 deductable, plus $250 for the SE comp. Had I not had the warranty, it would've been an additional $960.

Our 07 will be 5yrs old this March and with 36k on her the only thing I had to replace other than the oil/filter, tires/tubes, and brakes is the gas line inside the gas tank, which would not have been covered anyway.

So, If I'd got the Ext warranty I would not have used it at all. Now with her being put up for the winter it would expire this coming spring.

It'd be nice if U really needed it from yr 3-5, (Some one that put 20-30k miles a yr on a bike would prob come out ahead with it) but I think the average rider would have any serious issues show up in the first yr or two. So the 2yrs standard warranty would be used on most trouble if any problems did occur.

I bought the 5yr plan when I bought my 07 Dyna Low Rider new. My plan was to keep the bike and that's still the plan. I love the bike, it's running good, it looks good, I'm happy. I'm also happy that I bought the ESP "insurance" as some folks call it. In my case, I've had two warranty repairs performed. I had to replace the fuel pump and system relay, and I had to replace the shifter shaft. Each of these repairs cost me $50 deductable. I may have just about broken even on the deal, but let me tell you, I appreciate the peace of mind. For me it was worth it, and as it's turned out so far, I think I'm just about break even with about a year to go.
