HOG Road Captain ?s
Local dues are sometimes paid with that purchase also...
In our Chapter every January you have to watch the group riding film and afterwards take a written test...simple questions that go over group riding fundamentals..usually there are at least 15 certified Road Captains in our Chapter of about 125 members. I am under the impression that National HOG does not endorse the use of Road Captains on HOG rides but that decision is left up to the individual Chapters to make that assessment and participate in the practice.
Word of note....In the 10 years that I have been a member of this Chapter there hasn't been one crash or accident in that time frame...We have two rides a month and have always used Road Captains to lead, mid group and sweeps (tail gunner)... Our local Chapter by laws state that at least two Road Captains have to be present on the ride to lead and sweep to be eligible for a a pride point.

I belong to just one chapter.
RC class was led by the local head road captain.
Every chapter will be different.
After the instruction, I was given a RC patch.
We don't do review classes but we ride enough to keep our skills practiced.
Once that patch got sewn on, it's there forever.
We have weekly dinner rides led by a RC.
Depending on if I am free for the ride, I'll go along, possibly led by another RC.
Just because our RC's aren't leading, we still watch the group as a whole.

It seems like many of the critical people on here have never been terribly active with the local chapter.
In general, a HOG Road Captain has to be recognized as a competent rider, knowledgable with the local roads, and respected by the Chapter. I found the struggle to be how to lead a ride that engages the senior members, but doesn't cause duress to the guy that bought his first bike last week.
Most Chapters have their local informal policies on requirements.
Hope you found a spot in the last 4 years! ;-)
