A couple friends and I were talking about what kind of percentage markup(invoice-MSRP) the dealers are working with now. Some say as high as 20% and others believe as low as 12%. Anyone have any knowledge on this topic?
It depends which types of items you are talking about. Almost all clothing as about a 200 to 300 percent markup, there parts I would bet have 50 percent easy. Different items have different markup. I worked retail for 5 years doing electronics and purchasing. So i'll tell you about that.
T.V.'s....Between 30 and 40 percent somtimes as low as 20 percent.
VCR's are about the same.
Speakers were always high at between 50 and 70 percent markup.
Audio equipment was 30 to 40.
Point being, don't fell like they are getting the shaft when they give you 20% off. Believe me they are still making plenty of money and so was I when I worked in retail, I made commission for most of the time so I paid special attension to the profit since that what I was paid on.
Sorry guys, but most of you are wayyyyyyy too high. I work at a Harley dealership and I can guarantee no one is making 2 to 3 hundred percent markup on anything, including clothes. I won't say what the exact markup is on bikes or anything else, but the lowest percentages mentioned in this post are pretty close. You have to remember that a Harley dealership is a franchise and we have to pay their prices for clothing, parts and bikes, we don't get to haggle over prices......then there's franchise fees, promotional fees, brochures, catalogues, etc, etc.....
Who cares what they make? You have choices and if you can find it cheaper than buy it. If you like the HD stuff than buy that. It is what makes us stockholders happy.
