So if one is putting on slip-on pipes, it sounds as though the recommendation is blue???

I would say yes. Blue is standard on most jobs, as not everything on a bike is ever "permanent".
My dad just bought some blue from the Harley dealer. It came in a red tube, which in blue writing said, "Blue Loctite"

I only use 1 drop. Never had anything fall off yet (17 years).

No, blue is not called for on high temp. parts...use white..(medium strength/high temp)

I use blue, but I also hear clear nail polish works well to in not so improtant stuff.
