Helmet laws for minors and provisional mc endorsement for first 2 years requiring a helmet
This could be intersting but just want to get others feelings I live in a state that has no helmet law (Iowa) but i recenly have heard rumbling about protecting children (from stupid parents i guess) but the want to put a minimum age to be a passenger and when they can choose to wear a helmet. they also want to put a provisional liscense so to speak for someone that gets a MC endorsement say first 2 years must wear a helmet. there is nothing proposed but law makers are looking at this in my state some most likely will fly some probably not. I have heard ages of 12 to be a passenger and 18 to choose if they wear a helmet or not some want it to be 21. they also are looking at requiring a helmet for any MC operator under 18 some want 21 here also to wear a helmet, or any MC operator that has had his endorsement less than 2 years. what are your thoughts
my thoughts pasengers under 18 or operators under 18 sure maybe protect them from them selves I guess not sure my feeling here 100% I require my kids 9 and 11 to wear a helmet on their atvs and they have not ridden as a passenger on a bike on the street, not ready for them there yet and 12 may not be my min number for them, but i am the parent and i will decide when that is unless we get a law that places a min. on it, my 11 year old cant sit still long enough for someone to brush her hair much less an the back of a bike lol. as far as the provisional part i dont like any of it most if not all of us were riding an streets long before we got our endorsement me i got mine 2 years ago and rode for 11 years before that
My opinion is, you will never regret the inconvenience of wearing a helmet, or the expense of a good quality helmet, the first time you smack your head on the road or other hard object. And the thing is ,you never know when that moment will be. My long time riding buddy had a minor miscalculation while riding with a German style novelty helmet on. He died 4 hours later. I'm sure he would have bought a better helmet if he knew he was going to wreck that day, and smack his head on the road. So the big decision for some is do I care about the right to choose, or the right to live.,,
I am not apposed to helmet laws. It is not a freedom. Driving is a privilege not a right. I am growing tired of the whiners crying about it. There is no freedom of choice even remotely involved any where in even the strictest or loosest interpretation of the Constitution.
I never said I dont wear a helmet anywhere in my post. I wear a helmet about 99% of the time. i dont wear when i go to work 8 blocks away from home and the occasional jaunt to store about a mile away all other riding is done with a dot helmet that fits well i know a helmet is can prevent injury and death in some cases. i took a rock to the head 2 years ago and almost always wear it 13 stitches and barely keeping the bike up was enough for me. it was a big debate at a recent abate meeting and i saw some serious stupidity this weekend out riding like 3 on a bike no helmet 2 one on gas tank and one pillion seat operator 40 ish 2 yongster maybe 10 got me to thinking

The Constitution lists the powers of the government, not the rights of the citizens. We have freedom of choice exactly because it is not in the Constitution.

Exactly. Other people including the government need to mind their own damn business and STFU. Bunch of fuggin nannies anyway...
I've been riding since 1970 and have hit the pavement twice (cagers fault both times) at better than 35mph. My noggin smacked the road on the second one hard enough for a 2 day headache, so I am a firm believer in wearing a helmet. I have no problem for mandatory helmet use for young people under the age of 18. Not sure if there is any data available concerning accidents and years of riding experience, but I would tend to think that inexperienced riders are involved in more accidents. IMHO, I think it would probably be a good idea for people with less than 2 years of experience to wear one.

As someone who sometimes has to drive a car, I don't want to accidentally kill someone who might not have died had they been wearing a helmet.
unless there is something taking helmet choice into consideration when charging drivers. But even then, I still have to live with the death of someone on my hands who might not have died if they were protecting themselves.

I believe that's correct.
You can't even use a vehicle on public roads unless it has been registered, and depending on the state, inspected and meets certain safe operation requirements. and even then, you must have a license. The roadways are paid for by public tax money, and subject to public laws. I don't think there's any infringement on your rights, because you never had the rights you imagine are taken away by a helmet law.

I wear a helmet, always. Passengers on my bike wear a helmet, always. That being said I do this because it is my choice. I am an adult and can make my decisions. IMHO, adults can choose thier fate, kids need help. Helmets should be required until 18. Then it should be up to the rider/passenger.
