Did it just start making the noise, or did you just get the bike? When I first got a Harley after riding "metric" bikes, I thought it made so much mechanical noise it would not run a week...15 years later it is still running fine

Thanks for all the responses. It is a 97 sportster. It has 7000 original miles on it. I don't know much about it, as this is my first Harley. I changed the oil, and primary fluid, changed the plugs, cleaned the air filter, and adjusted the primary chain. I really can't hear the ticking noise until it warms up. It seems to be coming from top of the motor in the rocker boxes. Is there a way to check to make sure it is getting the proper amount of oil to the rocker arms. The oil light does not come on.

Do a search, there are a hundred threads on the sportster clicking issue. It's normal. Mine sounded like a sewing machine sometimes.

Oil light should come on when you turn the key on and switch the handlebar switch to run. This tells you that the bulb is good. Once you start the bike the light goes out----oil pressure should be good to go. I would be willing to bet that what you are hearing is normal noise. No miles on the bike and if you used a good oil---it should be okay.
