I've had several touring bikes before buying a late model touring bike. The case with the older models, pre-2007, with the 88" motors and 5-speed transmission, upon changing the primary oil I would just dump 32 onces in after draining the old stuff out. Now I see where the service manual calls for 38 onces. My question is, how many of you just put a quart and call it good enough, and how many go through the trouble of adding the extra 6 onces.
Thanks in advance Jonnierock
I am going through this now with my '07. I changed the primary, added 38 and developed a leak on the inner primary at the lip seal as the manual calls it. At 4,000 miles it should not be leaking. My friend has an '08 touring and we both spoke with a couple of dealers. We were both told at a service they dump in a quart. I changed mine from Syn3 to formula+ and just a quart. This last weekend, 280 miles and not even a stain of oil on the inner primary case near the main sprocket. I have now added two more ounces and will try again this weekend. I looked at several pictures and the manual. Even with a quart there is still a lot of things still touching the oil and slinging it everywhere.
2000 flhtcui,my book says with bike upright oil should come to the bottom of the brass colored clutch adjustment plate.mine took a quart and a half to reach that level and now my clutch is easier to pull in

Mine calls for 38 and thats what I put in. The engine calls for 4 Qts and that is also what I put in. No trouble with this bike or any of my past bikes.
I don't just dump in whatever the manual says. If it says 38 on a wet re-fill, I put in 32 and check to see where it is on the clutch basket, it's a pain is the *** but the right way to do it. Same with the engine, if it says 4qts on an oil change, 3qts go in, maybe 3 1/2 and check oil level in the correct manner and add till correct level is attained. I take time to make sure I don't overfill cause it happened once on an engine fill and every ounce that it was overfilled came out the breathers and it was a total mess.
