Err...interesting, first post...revived a 3+ year old thread. Usually activity like this points to a spammer that came in via a Google search for ancient threads to bounce and put some spam affiliate link in. But..errr...wow.

Anyhoo...Friday, and beer time!

Actually you're all incorrect. Al Gore was busy writing AlGore-ythms while inventing the internet and he stumbled across what turned out to be the early version of the Evolution motor. Al was quite the bowler in his younger days, and had struck up a friendship with another bowler who would go on to become the CEO of AMF. Later that evening, him and Tipper had dinner with the CEO of AMF who just happened to be next door neighbors with Willie G. Davidson, whom they had invited along. During dinner is where he laid out his discovery to them.

Willie G wasn't quite sold on the idea because there wasn't any cartoon skulls on the original drawings and blueprints, but he kept an open mind. The CEO of AMF believed in the idea so much that he decided to purchase the struggling company so that this breakthrough could come to fruition. The lower emissions from the Evo single-handedly kept the planet from overheating and burning up and/or from turning into one colossal frozen popsicle. The rest is history.

I'm glad this old dead thread was resurrected so that I could set the record straight here.

The first Evo I saw was in the summer of '83 in a new '84 Softtail. It takes time to develop a new engine. There is no doubt that the Evo was developed while Harley was owned by A.M.F.

Before A.M.F. Harley had three models made in the U.S.A. The FLH "Dresser", the Electric start Sportster XLH and the kicker XLCH Sportster. The Superglide and it's variations like the Low Rider and Wideglide were all introduced under A.M.F. and sold like hotcakes. No doubt the Softtail introduced in the summer of '83, which had the original Evo motor was developed under A.M.F. too.

Incidently I owned a '67 pre A.M.F. bike in '69 and bought a '72 new. That '72 A.M.F. bike was trouble free and I rode it happily all over the country for many years. The flywheels never scissored and it came stock with a gear driven cam. I never knew it was a piece of junk until many years later when I heard younger guys saying how bad Harleys were under A.M.F!

Excellent answer. Though I doubt it will ever change. Ignorant people will always believe that if it had AMF on the tank, that Harley-Davidson only put their names on the bikes also and sold them. AMF Harley's were still designed and made by the same folks that made them prior to the AMF years, and since the AMF years. They are NOT AMF motorcycles. They are Harley-Davidson motorcycles with AMF stickers on them due to AMF giving HD money to make those "so-called" crappy bikes. BTW, the Aeromacchi bikes I grew up on, 65cc, 125cc, 175cc, and 250cc, and my 1980 Low Rider, all had that AMF sticker on them. Guess what, not one single problem with any of those bikes except I outgrew all but one of them.
