Hi,a Harley owner here in Sweden got this message when he ordered parts from House of Harley Davidson :
** INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS **
Effective August 1, 2011, Harley-DavidsonŽ has implemented a new policy where
all U.S. dealers no longer can ship orders to an address outside of the United
States. (APO/FPO addresses are excluded.) Please make plans now to place
new orders before this date. We welcome you to visit our dealership in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, home of Harley-DavidsonŽ and the Harley-Davidson Museum. As a
reminder, your international shipment cost does not include your government's
Customs duty fees and taxes. These are collected by your Country on delivery
of your order. It is not a payment to us, in any way. We are not able to
declare a lower value or a "gift" for your order to avoid these taxes.
Have you in the US heard about this ?? Many here in Sweden (and other countries i suppose) buy parts in US these days.
We have the same thing here in Canada. We call it free trade. Deeley has the HD franchise here and being the Canadian dollar is 1.05 US it's cheaper for us to buy through the States. Deeley loses money so HD refuses to ship across the border.
Also HD in Canada refuses to work on US market bikes 1HD in the serial # means no warranty. They also B.S you on they are the only ones that can inspect US market Harleys for Canadian registration Funny how the warranty is no good but the inspection at a couple of hundred is.
I have bought a lot of parts / accessories from the States too, as even with shipping its usually a lot cheaper than here in the UK. Could you buy from an independant, i,d imagine Harley would,nt have the same control over them.
Maybe Harley themselves will loose a lot of money on this suggestion.I don´t think
so many here are intrested in to buy Harley OEM parts to Swedish pricing. They will probaly
look for other brands when they buy their Harley parts instead.
Here in the UK Harley parts are priced way over the US price - they seem to use a 1:1 exchange rate. We get massively ripped off so there is a tendency to try to buy direct from the US which even if UK customs "intercept" and charge us 20% VAT for the privilege still provides a good saving.
Harley will try to protect local franchises tho' and I think that's what they are doing here. I heard that dealers in Belgium complained to Milwaukee about a dealer in SE England that was selling complete bikes (unregistered) - in England - to Belgian riders who would then take them to Belgium, register into Belgian plates and save some cash. The UK dealer lost their franchise.

You are correct.. HD is protecting the dealers. Frustrating, but I get it. They made an investment, and they are trying to protect it.
Same thing being done with parts being sold on internet by HD dealers for a discount. Dealers are complaining that out of state dealers are undercutting prices.
