I live in Ohio, no helmet laws. I wore a bandana last year on my 2010 Road King, couldnt find a DOT Helmet to fit my head without looking stupid, my head must be oval. LOL. I did find a German Novelty Helmet online and ordered it and it fits me great with no wind resistance goin down the road and I would guess is lined with about 3/4 inch of padding. This has to be somewhat safer than a bandana, Right?
No. A helmet consists of an outer hardshell, energy absorbing styrofoam-like liner and then the inner foam liner for comfort. You are missing the most important part of the helmet-the energy absorbing styrofoam! The hardshell protects the styrofoam and distributes the impact over the styrofoam liner and the liner crushes, absorbing the sudden impact of the skull. This helps prevent the brain (which is basically like thick jello) from slamming as hard into the inside of the skull, which is what causes traumatic brain injury.
I would say maybe a little? I dont wear a helmet either, I cannot find one that doesnt hurt my head or make me feel like I have a mushroom head... I guess anything is a little safer than a bandana...

better than a bandana, not near as good as a DOT, but very stylish, ha

I also believe that a novelty helmet is about 1/2 as safe as a DOT helmet. I'm sure a novelty helmet's hard shell will outperform a bandana or beanie every time. Everybody's risk level varies. Just do what suits you, as I'm sure your grown up enough to know the risks.
