I live in CA, and once bought a 49 state model bike from florida, so I wouldnt have to deal with the CA crap. But it easy to take off. I don't think most non CA people are aware of this.
Wondering cause I got the itch for new bike. Have a non-CA bike in CA (with appropriate miles to sell it here) and thinking about a trade. I'm buying for me and not for resale but can't help wondering about future potential for resale (just in case).
Mine came out of Oregon, but was built for Kalifornia.
When I got it with 2000 miles on it, the previous owner already de-calified it. SE II slip ons took care of the kittys in the muffler and the SERT and download fattened it up where it needed it. Don't see the charcoal canister anymore either?
IMO, most people will change the mufflers anyhow, so a Cali bike was worth no less to me.
My tech tells me my California bike also has a different cam in it. California requires exhaust valves to close completely before the intake valves open. 49 state bikes allow for some scaveging with their cams. Haven't verified this but sounds credible.[8D]

That seems pretty far fetched as we did a calibration on an Atkinson Cycle engine at work for a hybrid vehicle. That engine cycle has tremendous overlap.
Wouldn't be to hard to verify cam part numbers at a stealer vs. here say.
As for getting a Kali bike.... I was unaware until I checked the VIN out and broke it down. Never dawned on me that Oregon was next door. I read in a bike rag that MANY bikes on the west coast, even Nevada & Utah sold ones could be Kali legal, just have to break down the VIN to find out. But it sure runs freakin' good without all the issues I read about from all the other 06's with popping, lean conditions, poor MPG etc. I think the dealer out there got the dyno tune pretty darn close. And since I do calibrations for a living on dynos, I am pleased.
Funny thing though, I still have all my silly GOVT stickers, and NO WHERE does it mention CAFE stuff?
I was sweating for a bit after reading the threads on nightmare registations. It had over 7500 miles and to insure I could register it it turned out to be a Kali approved mc.
It would be safe to say that a 50 state Harley would be worth a little more cause of the HUGE market for bikes in the state of Kalifornia. Lots of people with large amounts of money looking for Harleys in the state.
