IMO it could be a money pit..

Too many variables in the mix. Evos if taken care of can go 100-150 k miles easy. Thinking its not been been treated very good.

With all that work and only 60k on the clock it sounds like its had a hard life and not been looked after, maybe you should post this on the evo section of the forum, there seems to be a few FXR experts there.

Just had a thought,i had an FXR some years ago,and the return spring in the gearbox broke i was around 5 miles from home at the time, and bike was stuck as i recall in 2nd gear, and i managed to ride it home, could be thats the problem with this bike of yours,at the time it cost around $600 in your money to fix at a dealers as it had done a fair bit of damage to the gears and that was around 1994, hope that helps you.

+1, I had an 88 FXR and the same thing happened to me right around the same amount of miles. I'd be willing to bet that at most you'll have to replace the return spring and 1st, maybe 3rd gear and that's about it. If I remember mine, that was all that had to be replaced. It cost about the same to fix as magna's quote.

Personally, if you're buying this as a second bike to complement your brand new Harley and you're getting it as a project, I'd jump on it. I'd love to have another FXR and I've actually been checking Craigslist and Ebay a bit looking for a deal.

Once you get a bike, that won't be the case for long!

You have to have sense enough to quit shopping once you found the bike you're looking for.

I'd have no problems buying it. all it needs is some tranny work and it sounds like you'd be done.
I'm not afraid to get dirty and work on a bike.

oh, and OCT49, all harleys are money pits whether there's something wrong with them or not
