Is it worth it?
Otherwise, you end up with a new bike you can't afford to make your own, and a rattletrap you can't afford to fix up.
You only think you have extra money, because you have never owned a Harley. As soon as you get the new one, you are going to start thinking of things you want to change - it would be common for people who can afford it to blow a couple of thousand on that stuff right away.
Does your new bike have saddlebags and a windshield? If you try riding it very far, you'll want them. That's well over $1,000 of your extra money burned - add a couple of hundred more to make them removeable, so you can still look cool cruising down to Hooters. Now how about those cool looking chrome collections to make your bike more individual? Yep. Now if you actually get around to riding it, you'll burn that last $500 you saved up on hotel rooms and gas.
When I bought my FXST, I was going to remove some of the spikes the last owner put on and then keep it stock. I said that several times - "remind me, I'm not making any changes to this bike." Except the horn cover. And adding saddlebags. And a windshield, of course. And an air cleaner cover. And a chrome derby cover. And some new handlebars. With risers. I'm really trying not to spend any more, so I can still afford to ride it.
