Cold our there today 47 degrees - Rode up to have lunch at KC's corner for a burger and COFFEE ? Yeah coffee,no beer,no coke for me today, best tasting joe I ever drank, warmed me up.Rarely seeing any bikes on the road the past couple of weeks and the ones I've seen aren't HD's - WTF ???
If this wasn't a new ride just out of break-in I might not have been out there either, but I don't have much free time lately so can't wait to get lucky with the weather, this far into October the odds are against it anyway. It was only a 30 mile round trip.
Wanted to experiment with a couple of things I've heard or seen other riders do-
1.Tried some ear plugs to see what it's like and hated them.Felt like everything was internalized-what noise, viberation etc there was felt more like it was transmitted up through my body,a weird sensation.People who do high milage tell me they like 'em - Maybe out on the highway a few hundred miles at a time I'd see the benefit, but I doubt it.
2.Tried rubber gloves under my regular gloves- For the record, the regular gloves I have are cheap, pretty much worthless and have small tears in 'em,but that's what was in the closet and I have a whole box of surgical latex gloves in my garage so decided to see if latex gloves help with windchill as I've heard. The short answer's YES,but the best answer is buy some quality gloves and you won't need latex gloves beneath 'em and you won't feel like a Protologist in training every time you hop back on your scoot.
3.My current leather jacket is a made in America flight jacket that weighs a ton.Really warm but open at the neck and doesn't close tight at the wrists.I'm looking to get another leather specifically for on the bike-Probably Fox Creek....but in the meantime I wore one of those Northface Mountain climbing parkas and must say they work incredibly well--velcro closure at the wrist can be cinched really tight- and coverage arond the neck really good as well. Not motorcycle stylish, but pretty unbeatable as far as function.
4.Full Face helmet is great, really realized how much air actually flows through the vents on these things when the air's frigid, but I'd hate to close 'em and fog up the inside.
I'll probably put 'er to bed for the winter in another 3 to 4 weeks - I'm crazy enough to be out there on and off through the winter but I'd rather this new bike not encounter all the salt 'n sand they throw on the roads up here.If I was hell bent on riding year round I'd get a "beater bike" to ride.

Sounds nice Mark-a great 1st HD....better put that catalogue down before ya go crazy !!! I'm taking my time and dragging out the enjoyment of buying toys.Probably only going to throw a chrome forged or cast front wheel on before I put it to bed for the winter.
Bought my Nightrain at Uke's in Kenosha...
Hope it's a really short winter, when's all the stuff I hear about global warming supposed to happen ???
Best wishes to ya Mark, looks like you're only a few miles down the road.
Right in between the two of you...Buffalo Grove here. The Fox Creek jacket does help and so will a good pair of gaunlet gloves, stops the cold air from getting to ya.
Good place to be - you can easily shoot up north or west (that's what I do) to get to roads where there's less of those 4 wheeled idiots trying to kill us.
If you or anyone else in the general area sees me kicking around the forum this spring, give me a shout, maybe we can do a ride.
