My buddies all wear chaps but, I have a pair of Road Warrior textile pants from HD. I use those when it's cold. I just can't wear chaps. I don't like them.
I think it might depend on where you live. around here, I wear pants all the time, except when the humidity and temp go way up. Was never into chaps, need to cover the parts of your body that hits the pavement....your butt. Been down a couple of times and basically slid on my back and butt. On that note, chaps are good to cut the cold, but I personally feel they don't add that much in skid protection. When I went down, it was into the fetal position, back and butt, my legs hardly ever touched the pavement. Not bragging, just saying what happened.
I wear my chaps when its cold. I started off buying a really cheap set many years ago at a swap meet and eventually bought a high end set. Funny thing, no one has ever in the 3 decades I have been wearing them, ever said one thing about them. But then again, I don't hang around with short riding wannabes who think riding motorcycles involves heading to the nearest bar and sitting inside while talking about how cool they are.
There's another thing I have recently picked up on about this ongoing forum debate concerning chaps. I think you might find that the same people who are ripping on chaps are the same group who rip on windshields, saddlebags (cause they ruin the lines of the bike LOL!), and any other protective gear people wear. It took me a while because I'm slow, but its pretty clear that people who wear chaps actually ride..... a lot and a long way. The other group, not so much.
I wear them most times I ride. Last year when a crazy lady tried to kill me I was wearing them and they saved my knee from major damage. I could give a crap what anyone thinks about the clothes I wear, the bike I ride, or any of that nonsense, life is too short to waste it that way...
By the way I know I'm a smart *** and I don't like the looks of chaps but I don't think people who wear them are gay... well maybe Twizted but then again anyone that's been around here a while probably thinks that.
