most old time vetern riders have a set of chaps...well worn.

Mine are starting to get tattered. When I need them, they're there. When you live in South Dakota, you don't always have perfect riding weather....so you adapt.

Unfortunatly , I have got off my bike five times since 1954 when I started riding the darned things.( on the street, dont count get/offs on dirtbikes)

three times with a car /truck at fault..
twice , because I lost control..
All the above equaled sliding on the road..never did grind through my bluejeans ..*** remained intact..( did lose wallet when pocket was ground off)
however ..the palms were severely skinned twice..finger tips ok

btw , I have full leather gloves , and fingerless..
also have chaps , and leather pants..
both are protection .

Opinions are one thing , experience is another.
every one has a opinion, how many have experience?

Knock on wood, never been down on the street. But when I was younger I did a lot of flat track racing, won Junior and Senior championships and worked my way into expert class. I feel I have some experience, I think there is a lot of common skills betwen racing and riding on the street. The dirt track is hard like a road surface when you're in the grove on the corners. I had my share of spills on the track. We always wore full leathers, incuding gloves leather pants and leather coat. It was a rule as a matter of fact. My point is, why compromise that protection by going fingerless or assless? I know it's hot to wear full gear all the time, and I don't always leather up. Although I almost always wear leather gloves, with fingers. Maybe I'll get a pair of fingerless sometime, they'd be cooler and still offer protection.
