Drenched my bike last fall during final "pre-winter storage" tank fill. Rode home, removed tank console & did thorough rinse, wash & wax. IMO - your bike so do what you feel is needed. My bike...I'd wash & wax ASAP...
Didn't drenched too bad. Just enough to spill and run down side....splashed up top a bit too
I always have a microfiber towel and some cleaner handy everytime I fill up in case this happens. While at bike week it did happen sprayed some cleaner on and wiped it off.
I wouldn't leave the gas on there as it can do damage but keep in mind it evaporates pretty quickly also
As long as the clear coat is still good, you should not have a problem. Whatever you do, don't wipe it off with a towel from the station. It will evaporate off pretty quick. It may take off the wax so next time your home, just wash and wax and you should be good to go.
Don't use paper towels to wipe the gas off. That's a good way to scratch the paint.
I think it's fairly common for owner's to get some gas on their tank. I've only done it bad once. I had the nozzle in a little further then I thought was necessary, to get a full fill up, so I pulled the nozzle out just a bit so it wasn't in as deep. Of course that's all it took to get gas all over the top of the tank. I used some paper towels at the station to soak the gas up, but didn't move the towels at all on the paint.
