Default battery and charging system

I thought i had a bad battery because my battery tender junior would not get off the red light charging changed it then 1 week later it is staying on again so i checked the voltage regulator out i thought put new one on still when i put the meter on the battery it still reads 12.7 volts when motor is reved up dont know what rpm so i ride around for about 1 hour come home check battery voltage 12.5 when motor not running. seems like it might be charging am i doing something wrong i thought it should read 13 or 14 volts when charging.i did put meter in the stator plug when running it is about 38 vac. How long will the battery last when stator not charging? 2000 softail deuce 38000 miles

yea you should get 13-14 volts at 2000 rpm. make sure all fuses and or circuit breakers are good. id ck all grounds as well. did you install the regulator properly? etc.

I've said this so many times I've lost track. It's almost worthy of becoming a STICKY.

Anytime anyone thinks they may be having battery or charging issues, you should always have the battery load tested first. That generally doesn't cost anything and usually will keep you from become a part changer to fix a problem and save some money.

Rodney this may not apply to you but I thought I would just throught it out there anyhow.

Visit the DIY section of HD Forums in electrical section and it spells out the testing of the stator. The stator could be putting out voltage but no amps, one of the coils could have short.
