Back in '85 or so all I had to ride was my bike. I rode it through some of the hardest rains we had that year. Being able to see was the biggest issue for me. I wasn't scared I don't think. I felt more anxious to get the hell off the freeway. If I was given a choice I would not do it again unless it was the only way I had to get somewhere, and a deadline to get there.

I don't have any bike-specific rain gear - and I'm not buying any tonight. Do I just suck it up and go? Hide under bridges for downpours? Bring my "standard" rain gear? Or do I polish the bike in the shed instead and maybe take a ride closer to home?

Give this relative noob some tips, please!
Go to Home Depot buy a rain suit and duck tape. Duck tape is to tape up your sleaves and legs so rain will not get in. Cheap rain suit verses buying a 500 HD one.

Do not ride for at least 1 hour after hit starts raining. All the oil will float up. If you get caught in rain and can not pull off the road give 2.5 times the normal stopping distance between you and the car. Reason .. .... Rain started buddy couldn't get off the road no where to go heavy traffic cars hit brakes hard he hit an oil spot while water on the highway and he wrecked. Nothing he could do. Always drive slower in the rain and GET off the road if you can or if its an all day rain drive just be careful no fast braking.

If you never rode in the rain or haven't much its time you do. Get going.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE GOOD TIRES not tires that are mostly worn out.
